This hike typically takes around 4 hours and 15 minutes to complete, covering a distance of approximately 16 kilometers.
This is a moderate hike, considered untypically hilly for the Netherlands with significant climbing and descending. You'll encounter varied terrain, including natural paths, unpaved sections, gravel, asphalt, and paved roads. The initial part through the 'Onzalige Bosschen' is known for its considerable elevation changes.
While generally accessible, its moderate difficulty and 'untypically hilly' terrain with significant elevation changes might be challenging for absolute beginners or very young children. Good fitness and sure-footedness are recommended. A shorter variant to Rheden station (around 11 km) is also mentioned in some guides.
The trail conveniently starts directly at Dieren station and ends at Velp Station. Both stations are well-connected by public transport, making it easily accessible by train.
The trail is beautiful year-round. Autumn offers spectacular displays of color from deciduous trees. August is ideal for seeing the vast heather fields at Posbank and Zijpenberg in full bloom. Mid-May is when rhododendrons bloom around the tranquil lake.
Veluwezoom National Park is home to diverse wildlife. You might spot wild horses, red deer, wild boar, roe deer, and fallow deer. Scottish Highlanders and Icelandic horses also graze in the area.
Yes, you'll pass several highlights including the Walking trail around the Prins Willemberg and the Koningslaan (Veluwezoom). A significant viewpoint is the Posbank, offering panoramic views over the IJsseldal and Achterhoek, extending into Germany on clear days. You'll also experience Gentle forest trails in Veluwezoom National Park and the Heather Fields at Veluwezoom.
Yes, this route largely follows the white-red markers of the NS-wandeling Veluwezoom and the Maarten van Rossumpad - 11. It also shares sections with the Dwars door Gelderland (14) and the Heuven Beekhuizen Veluwezoom trails.
Veluwezoom National Park generally allows dogs, but they must be kept on a leash in most areas to protect wildlife. Always check local signage for specific rules and any restricted zones.
No, there is no general entrance fee or permit required to hike this route through Veluwezoom National Park. However, the park is open between sunrise and sunset, and it's always wise to check for any temporary access restrictions.
Yes, there are opportunities for refreshments along the route. You can find places like De Carolinahoeve and Paviljoen De Posbank to stop for a break and a drink or snack.
What a top route! Definitely in the top 5 of last year. Very varied: forests, heathland, sandy plains, parks and water features. Perfect weather too of course
Beautiful spring day. Many walkers and cyclists. Beautiful route
Beautiful piece of the Netherlands, spicy but we enjoyed it so much, and Posbank you are so beautiful
A good day to test the water resistance of my gear. Unfortunately, nothing gets a pass with this amount of rain. Nevertheless, a beautiful walk, and today wonderfully quiet.
Beautiful but tough NS walk over the Veluwezoom. Many steep climbs. The first part through a beautiful beech forest, so lots of shade. It was still humid and many brightly colored naked snails seen. Then over the Postbank with flowering heather and beautiful views. And then back to Velp through the forest.
Nice walk, mostly dry weather. March showers with hail. Lots of sun.
