Yes, the Bregenzerwald Cycle Route offers sections suitable for all fitness levels, including beginners. Many parts follow repurposed old railway lines, providing comfortable paths with gentle gradients and mostly paved surfaces, away from heavy traffic. These easier routes are generally up to two hours long with around 500 feet of elevation gain.
The terrain is quite varied. You'll find expansive valley floors with gentle gradients, but also more challenging mountain passes and wild ravines. While many routes feature mostly paved surfaces, some segments, especially on more difficult trails, can include unpaved sections like gravel, forest paths, and meadow paths. For the main Bregenzerwald Cycle Route, expect a good mix of paved and well-maintained unpaved sections.
The route offers stunning views of green mountain meadows, rolling hills, dense spruce forests, and the high mountains of Vorarlberg. You'll often cycle alongside the Bregenzerach stream. Notable points of interest include the Bregenzer Ache Cycle Path, the View of the Andelsbuch Hydroelectric Power Plant, and sections of the Old railway line.
Parking is available at various points along the Bregenzerwald Cycle Route, particularly in the towns and villages it passes through, such as Schoppernau and Doren. Look for designated public parking areas in these communities. Specific trailhead parking details can vary, so checking local signage upon arrival is recommended.
Yes, the Bregenzerwald region is well-served by public transport, including buses, which can often transport bicycles (check specific service rules). This allows for flexible planning, enabling you to start or end your ride at different points along the route without needing to cycle back to your starting point.
Generally, cycling with dogs is permitted on the Bregenzerwald Cycle Route, especially on the wider, less technical sections. However, dogs should always be kept on a leash, particularly when passing through villages, near livestock, or in nature protection areas. Always ensure your dog is comfortable with the distance and terrain.
No, there are no specific permits or entrance fees required to cycle the Bregenzerwald Cycle Route or to access the Naturpark Nagelfluhkette through which parts of the route pass. However, please respect the park's regulations, such as staying on marked paths and not disturbing wildlife.
The best time to cycle the Bregenzerwald Cycle Route is typically from late spring (May) through early autumn (October). During these months, the weather is generally pleasant, and all sections of the route are usually free of snow. Summer offers lush green landscapes, while autumn provides beautiful fall colors. Winter cycling is possible on cleared paths but can be challenging due to snow and ice.
Yes, the Bregenzerwald region is known for its hospitality. You'll find numerous cafes, restaurants, and guesthouses in the villages along the route, offering opportunities for refreshments, meals, and overnight stays. These establishments often feature local cuisine and provide a welcoming atmosphere for cyclists.
A significant portion of the Bregenzerwald Cycle Route utilizes sections of the former Bregenzerwaldbahn railway tracks. These repurposed railway lines provide comfortable cycling paths with gentle inclines, largely separated from motor traffic, making for a very pleasant and scenic ride.
Yes, the Bregenzerwald Cycle Route is part of a broader network. While the main route covers 85% of this tour, it also intersects with or runs alongside sections of other trails such as the "Rund ums Mellental" and the "Hof-Bregenzerach-Weg". The region also offers cross-border potential into neighboring Germany, Switzerland, and Liechtenstein.
We started our tour at 10 degrees and cloudy weather right at our guesthouse in Doren (700 meters in altitude). The first 5 km we went downhill to 470 meters, where we drove about 10 km on the old Wälderbahntrasse / OR 3: Bregenzerwald route along the Bregenzer Ach. Now it went through Egg, Andelsbuch, Bersbuch and Schwarzenberg to Mellau - one of the largest ski areas in the Bregenz Forest. A mountain railway also starts from here. The next section went through Hirschau, Schnepfau and Au to Schoppernau. Here we reached our destination after almost 44 km - the Diedamskopfbahn (valley station) at 850 meters above sea level. *** Sequel follows: *** From Schoppernau to Doren
*** Continuation: *** After we redeemed our tickets at the valley station, we started a 20-minute ride on the panorama train to the summit of the Diedamskopf at an altitude of 2,090 m. The view was fantastic, because up here the sky was almost cloudless and bright blue. We absorbed the last of the sun's rays and set out on our way back to the valley and back to Doren. On the way you took one or two photos and hurried to get home before dawn. On the entire route (> 85 km) we were allowed to ride on wonderful bike paths and marvel at numerous and impressive sights. Many greetings to all the other cyclists and we hope we were able to make our route tasty for you!
