This trail is generally rated as difficult due to its length of approximately 22.4 km and significant elevation gain of nearly 900 meters. While some sections are on well-prepared forest roads, others involve steep climbs and varied terrain, including serpentine paths and rubble fields. A good level of fitness and sure-footedness are recommended for the full route.
The full Hinterriss - Falkenhütte Trail is considered difficult and may not be suitable for beginners or young children due to its length and elevation. However, shorter, easier access routes to the Falcon Hut exist, such as from Eng-Alm over the Hohljoch, which is rated as easy to medium. For the main trail, hikers should have a reasonable level of fitness.
Parking is typically available in Hinterriss, which serves as a common starting point for this route. Specific parking areas may vary, so it's advisable to check local signage or online resources for the most current information on designated hiker parking.
Yes, the trail can be accessed via public transport. The starting point mentioned in the tour data is the Johannestal bus stop, indicating bus services are available to bring hikers close to the trailhead in the Johannestal area near Hinterriss.
The best time to hike the Hinterriss - Falkenhütte Trail is generally from late spring to early autumn (May to October). During these months, the weather is more stable, and the trails are free of snow. Always check local weather forecasts and trail conditions before heading out, especially in the shoulder seasons.
As the trail is located within the Karwendel Nature Park, there are generally no specific hiking permits required for day hikes, nor are there entrance fees to access the park itself. However, it's essential to respect all nature protection regulations, such as staying on marked paths and not disturbing wildlife.
Hikers can expect a varied terrain. The path includes well-prepared forest roads, foot-friendly hiking trails, and sections with moderate to steep ascents. You'll encounter serpentine paths through meadow slopes and, in some areas, cross through large fields of rubble, particularly towards the Falcon Hut.
The route offers breathtaking scenery. Key highlights include the dramatic Johannestal Gorge, the unique ancient maple trees of the Little Ahornboden, and the stunning views from the Falcon Hut itself, which is set against the backdrop of the towering Laliderer walls. You'll also pass through picturesque valleys and enjoy panoramic views across the Eng valley.
Yes, this trail is part of several longer, well-known routes. Sections of it overlap with the Adlerweg Etappe 10, the Via Alpina Red R43, and the Nordalpenweg 01. It also shares parts with the Karwendel Runde and the Dream path Munich-Venice, making it a segment of significant long-distance hiking trails across the Tyrolean Alps.
Yes, the Falcon Hut is a significant draw, offering accommodation and refreshments. It's a popular stop for multi-day tours. Additionally, the Eng-Alm, often a starting or connecting point, features traditional cheese dairies and other amenities.
Dogs are generally allowed on trails within the Karwendel Nature Park. However, they must be kept on a leash, especially in areas with grazing livestock or wildlife. Always ensure your dog is well-behaved and that you carry out any waste.
Yesterday we traveled to Hinterriß, in the beautiful Karwendel. After a night in the beautiful hotel "Zur Post", today we went up to the Falkenhütte. At 13 kg (including 2.5 kg of drinks), the backpack was a bit lighter than on my last tour. We started on a wide road, which we also walked on now and again, but at least half of the route was on beautiful narrow paths 😀 Accompanied at first by the loudly rushing Johannesbach, where there are 2-3 wonderful rest stops, we then made a short, worthwhile detour via the small Ahornboden 😍 The sun did its best again today, so we were happy about every tree that provided some shade. There were a lot of them at the beginning, but unfortunately they were in short supply on the steepest climb from the Ladiz Alm, so the last few kilometers were really hard 😰 When we arrived at the Falkenhütte, we enjoyed the fantastic view and decided not to climb the nearby Mahnkopf for the time being 😊
- Falkenhütte 1856m - Adlerweg - Ladizalm 1573m - Johannestal - Klammweg - Hinterriß 928m - Gasthof Post 🥘
The initial stage is brooding and hot, unfortunately, mostly on the wide MTB path without shade 🥵 the real hiking trails don't start until the next day
The crossing to the Eng and Lamsenjoch huts was not possible due to the early onset of winter, a lot of snow and several avalanches. Therefore the descent from the beautiful Falken hut was mostly via the supply road.
Start of the Karwendel tour starting from Hinterriss in perfect weather. Continue via the beautiful Johannestal to the Falkenhütte. There, after a short rest, up to the Mahnkopf and to spend the night in the new adjoining building of the Falkenhütte. An all-round successful start to the tour
