The trail is linear and can be started from either Engelberg or Grafenort. If you're coming by public transport, both Engelberg and Grafenort have train stations, making access very convenient. For those driving, parking is available near the train stations in both locations.
Yes, this trail is very family-friendly! It features numerous fire pits, picnic areas, benches, and even some play opportunities like swings and games for children along the way. There's also a developed barbecue area with tables, benches, and a drinking water fountain about halfway through, perfect for a family stop.
The terrain is mostly narrow but well-maintained, offering a mix of gravel, asphalt, and natural paths. While generally easy, it can be a bit slippery in places, especially after rain. The path winds through a dense, shady forest alongside the Engelberger Aa river.
You'll experience a mystical and wild romantic atmosphere. Key features include numerous stone, metal, and suspension bridges that cross the Engelberger Aa river over ten times, offering dynamic views of the water. You'll also pass by the picturesque Eugenisee lake, a cascading waterfall, and the impressive Aaschlucht Gorge itself. Starting from Engelberg, you can also enjoy magnificent mountain panoramas.
Yes, the trail is suitable for dogs. Just remember to keep your dog on a leash, especially in busier sections and near wildlife, and always clean up after them to preserve the natural beauty for everyone.
The trail is enjoyable throughout the warmer months. Its location within the gorge and under the cover of trees makes it an ideal hiking spot even on hot days, providing a pleasantly cool environment. While possible in winter, conditions can be slippery, so check local reports.
No, there are no permits or entrance fees required to hike the Engelberg Aa Gorge adventure trail. It is freely accessible to the public.
Starting from Engelberg and hiking towards Grafenort is generally considered the easier option. This direction is largely downhill, with only about 13 meters of incline and a descent of around 447 meters, making it less strenuous. Conversely, starting from Grafenort involves a significant uphill climb.
Yes, the Engelberg Aa Gorge adventure trail is part of the longer "ViaSbrinz" (Trail no. 40). You'll also find sections that overlap with the Unterwaldenroute and the Erlebnisweg Aaschlucht.
While the trail itself features picnic areas and a barbecue spot, you'll find cafes and restaurants primarily in Engelberg at the start (or end) of your hike. The small settlement of Grafenort also has limited options near its train station.
We recommend wearing sturdy hiking shoes, as some sections can be slippery. Dress in layers suitable for the weather, and bring water, snacks, and sun protection. If you plan to use the barbecue areas, remember to bring your own grilling supplies. Don't forget your camera for the scenic views!
A great, varied, and easy hike – for hot days 🔥 – through the Aa Gorge. It always follows the river (Engelberger Aa)💦 There are several bridges to cross, including a "swinging" suspension bridge 🙌 Two large picnic areas with barbecue facilities are located along the route. We made ourselves comfortable at the Grafenort Inn at the end of the tour 🥗🍻 – highly recommended! PS: The tour can of course also be done in reverse ↗️ 😉
Today we followed the Aa Gorge adventure trail from Engelberg at 1070 m above sea level. It was an unforgettable hiking experience. It started with the entry under a bridge over which the main road runs. We crossed numerous bridges, I think there were 7, back and forth over the Engelberger Aa, and the path typical of such gorges always ran past the roaring water. Right at the beginning at a reservoir we had a really nice encounter with a dipper, which was cleaning its feathers in the sun after its dives. Since the path runs mostly in the forest, it was probably warm, because the thermometer showed about 30 degrees. Halfway I was able to photograph a gray wagtail, a real highlight. Along the way there are several lovingly and purposefully prepared resting places with fireplaces, shelters, seating, pans, plates and cups, which have often been set up there by private individuals. After the Aaschluchtenweg at about 650 m above sea level and a descent of 400 HM, the path runs on flat terrain to Grafenort. From there we took the train back to Engelberg. It was a beautiful day with a hike to our liking.
A very beautiful, mostly shady tour along the Aa. The photos were taken looking forwards, but also looking back. There are places to sit and grill along the way. As some of them were already occupied, no photos were taken. Good shoes and possibly hiking poles are recommended. The altitude given is not entirely correct, as my cell phone had no reception at the entrance to the gorge. It is about 450m down and 10m up.
The adventure trail along the Aa Gorge leads over seven bridges, three of which are suspension bridges. A uniquely beautiful and interesting path that leads past a waterfall, barbecue areas, small tunnel,...
The Aaschlucht is a wild and romantic adventure trail. It leads over seven bridges and past boulders. On hot days, this trail is ideal for hiking due to its shady location. The numerous fire pits and picnic areas along the trail also invite you to linger. ⚠️At the moment (Feb.24), however, the trail is icy and slippery in some places.
A beautiful hike that's easy to do even in 30-degree heat. Plenty of shade and close to the water. 😁
The Aaschlucht is a wild, romantic adventure trail. It leads over seven bridges and past boulders. On hot days, this trail is ideal for hiking thanks to its shady location. The numerous fire pits and picnic areas along the trail also invite you to linger. Beautiful landscape, fantastic weather, great company, ... simply beautiful! There by 🥾 and back by 🚊😀!
Beautiful path along the Aa, suitable for the whole family. There are several well-equipped picnic areas along the way and various bridges to cross. The power of the water is impressive both to the eye and to the ear.
