The Mühlenecke Route is approximately 7.7 kilometers long and generally takes around 2 hours and 13 minutes to complete. However, if you take your time to enjoy the views and ancient forests, plan for closer to 3 hours and 45 minutes.
Yes, the Mühlenecke Route is generally classified as easy and is suitable for beginners and families. While some sections may have varying surfaces, including narrow or rocky paths, it's not overly challenging. The route is a circular walk, making it convenient for a family outing.
You'll encounter a variety of surfaces on this route. It begins with a meadow path along the Edersee-Vorbecken before joining the main Urwaldsteig. Expect forest trails, which can sometimes be covered with thick foliage, and some narrow or rocky sections. Sturdy footwear is recommended for comfort and stability.
The trail offers stunning natural beauty. You'll walk through ancient beech forests, a UNESCO World Heritage site, with impressive old oak and beech trees. Key highlights include the Edersee Lakeside Trail, the Mühlecke Viewpoint, Edersee, which provides expansive vistas of Lake Edersee, and a View of Niederwerbe and surrounding fields. There are numerous beautiful resting and viewpoints along the way.
Yes, the Mühlenecke Route is part of the broader Urwaldsteig Edersee, Hauptroute. It also shares sections with the Nord Süd Trail, Aschnitt Falkenstein - Nieder-Werbe, and the Kellerwaldsteig, Hauptroute, among others.
Yes, dogs are generally welcome on the Mühlenecke Route. However, as it's located within the Kellerwald-Edersee National Park, it's essential to keep your dog on a leash to protect wildlife and ensure a pleasant experience for all hikers.
No, you do not need a permit or have to pay an entrance fee to hike the Mühlenecke Route. Access to the trails within the Kellerwald-Edersee National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is generally free and open to the public.
The Mühlenecke Route is beautiful year-round. Spring brings fresh greenery, while autumn offers vibrant fall colors. Summer is popular for lake views, and winter can provide a serene, snowy landscape. For the most comfortable hiking experience, late spring to early autumn is often ideal, avoiding extreme temperatures.
Specific parking information isn't provided in the trail data, but as a popular circular route within the Kellerwald-Edersee area, you can typically find designated parking areas near the Edersee-Vorbecken or in nearby villages like Nieder-Werbe, which often serve as starting points for trails in the region. Look for signs indicating 'Wanderparkplatz' (hiker parking).
Given the varying terrain, sturdy footwear is highly recommended. Depending on the weather, layers of clothing are advisable. While not strictly necessary, walking poles can be helpful on some of the uneven or steeper sections. Always bring enough water, snacks, and a map or GPS device, such as the komoot app, for navigation.
While there are no facilities directly on the trail, the Mühlenecke Route is close to Lake Edersee and the village of Nieder-Werbe. You can find various cafes, restaurants, and pubs in these nearby areas to enjoy refreshments before or after your hike.
We recommend! Beautiful round on the Urwaldsteig (UE) and the hiking trail with the blue circle (who knows what the path is called? Haven't found anything). Unfortunately, I missed the turnoff because of all the photography and walked downhill too early😅. So back up the hill...... Highlights: crippled forest, beautiful paths, many fantastic views, high moor Hengstwiese with 1000-year-old oak
A constantly fascinating landscape with narrow paths of gnarled oaks and beeches as well as rocks. There is a new route on the Urwaldsteig at the Mühlecke which is very successful.
As almost always at Edersee: pleasant forest paths and exciting paths
I have been looking forward to this hike since last autumn when we canceled my planned short vacation because of my daughter's corona infection. Today the time had come, and it was really worth it. The varied tour always offers beautiful views of the lake, and I have a soft spot for gnarled trees and bogs anyway 😍. After the tour we enjoyed dinner in our parking lot and the view of the lake. Then we drove through a very beautiful, hilly, partly Mediterranean landscape to Fritzlar. Overnight: Mainzer Ring in Fritzlar Knowledge of the day: You discover unexpected landscapes in Germany if you let yourself drift a little ... 😇 👩👨🏼
Today we went up the Urwaldsteig from Nieder-Werbe, with a wonderful view of the lake and our Scheid peninsula from the bench. Unfortunately we were offline for a while, so there are a few straight lines, which means a few kilometers are missing. According to the "predecessor" it should have been just under 9 km in the end; appropriate given the weather. Nice shady route. 😎
On the second day at the Edersee we were finally able to see the lake. Before that we had fun with adventure golf and 5 rides on the summer toboggan run, the youngest was allowed to go 3 times. The hike itself then happily led through shady forest paths, always uphill, until we arrived at the Mühlecke. There are beautiful viewpoints of the Edersee with benches, which we used for a short rest. On the way back we chose the path to the Hengstteich, where according to legend a stallion was sacrificed to the gods. However, we would have been better off taking a detour, the direct route is now almost impassable in summer due to nettles and thorns. Well, nettles are said to be good for you sometimes...
Despite a little drizzle this morning, it was again very beautiful at the Edersee. With so much water you rarely see the lake. At the moment it is full and occasionally overflows. The Mühlecke is one of my favorite spots on the lake with the rocks, stones and gnarled trees.
