Around the Reindersmeer – De Maasduinen National Park This walk takes you through the northern part of the De Maasduinen National Park, in North Limburg. The impressive Reindersmeer is central, a former sand extraction lake that has now developed into a valuable nature reserve within the Maasduinen. Origin of the area The landscape of the Maasduinen is unique in the Netherlands. It was formed by centuries of interaction between water, wind and man. During the last ice age, enormous quantities of sand were deposited here by the wind, which led to the characteristic elongated sand ridges: the so-called dunes along the Maas. Unlike the well-known sea dunes, these dunes are located far from the coast and were formed by the action of the river and dry easterly winds. The Reindersmeer itself was created much more recently, in the period 1971-2001, by large-scale sand extraction for the concrete industry. After the sand extraction was stopped, the area was carefully redeveloped into a nature reserve, with the deep pool (sometimes more than 40 metres deep) now offering a special water quality and habitat for many species of plants and animals. Nature and landscape During this tour you will pass a wide variety of landscapes: Deep open water of the Reindersmeer: crystal clear, with fish species such as pike-perch, perch and eel. In the summer you often see breeding grebes, cormorants and sometimes even terns. Transition zones with bankside vegetation: reed beds, willow forests and marshy areas. Dry Maas dunes: with extensive heathlands, sand drifts and juniper thickets. Coniferous and deciduous forests: alternating Scots pine, oak, birch and rowan, in which woodpeckers, tree creepers and birds of prey live. Damp heathland and spring areas: with cotton grass, gentian, sundew and orchids. Flora and fauna The Maasduinen are rich in biodiversity. In addition to the wealth of birds, you will find many rare insects here, such as the small copper butterfly, the common blue and the comma butterfly. Reptiles such as the sand lizard and the smooth snake can also be found here. The area is also an important habitat for mammals such as roe deer, fox, pine marten and even the badger. Management The area is managed by Staatsbosbeheer and, together with the Bergerbos, the Quin and the Heerenven, forms a larger nature complex within the De Maasduinen National Park. Active nature management keeps the heathland open, protects the fens and combats exotic species in order to preserve the original species-rich flora and fauna. Special features along the way The De Maasduinen visitor centre offers information about the area. The characteristic swing bridge at the Reindersmeer is a striking point on the route. There are beautiful viewpoints along the route with views over the open water and the surrounding dunes.
If I can't go to the sea, then I'll go for a walk on the beach in the Maasduinen. Wide country and lots of nature. A round with a constant view of the water. There are enough rest areas to enjoy the beautiful scenery. Or plant yourself on the ground and bury your feet in the soft sand. There is so much more to discover here in the dunes. That's why I'll definitely be back soon.
Today I was walking in the Maasduinen with nice fellow hikers. A lap around the Reindersmeer always puts you in a bit of a holiday mood. The tour through the dune landscape is also worthwhile at sunset 🌅.
I highly recommend the Reindersmeer. The scenery is absolutely beautiful 🤩 It's a great place for hiking 🥾 It even gives you a nice holiday feeling, since you'll have sand in your shoes afterward 🤣 I think the photos speak for themselves 😍
