Running

Embark on the Devil's Garden Primitive Loop, a challenging 5.5 miles (8.9 km) route that guides you through Arches National Park's iconic landscape. You will navigate over slickrock, through sandy sections, and along narrow ledges, with the path often marked by cairns. This difficult jogging route involves a total elevation gain of 596 feet (182 metres) and typically takes around 1 hour and 16 minutes to complete. Prepare for varied terrain and some scrambling, especially in the primitive sections, which can be quite rugged.

When planning your visit, be aware that while parts of the trail are suitable for jogging, much of the primitive loop is considered strenuous hiking. Good hiking shoes with sticky rubber soles are highly recommended to handle the slickrock and scrambling sections safely. Always carry plenty of water, as the desert environment can become extremely hot, making hydration crucial for your comfort and safety. Consider starting early in the morning to avoid the midday heat.

This trail offers a spectacular journey through a landscape filled with unique rock formations and numerous arches. A major highlight is seeing Landscape Arch, one of the longest natural arches in North America, along with other impressive formations like Double O Arch and Tunnel Arch. The geological features you encounter here are a testament to millions of years of erosion, creating a truly distinctive desert experience.

Landscape Arch

Highlight • Natural Monument

Landscape Arch, one of the largest archs on the planet, stretches 3 feet longer than Zion National Park’s Kolob Arch. Though visitors can't walk directly under it due to its fragility, Devil's Garden Primative Trail Loop leads to a perfect viewpoint framed by the blue sky. Over the centuries, large pieces of the arch, some the size of cars, have fallen off. Getting here early is best, as this is a popular feature, and the lookout points can get crowded during peak hours of peak seasons.

This exciting portion of the Devils Garden Trail takes you up on top of one of the many fins in the area. After scrambling up a low angle step, you gain the spine of a large fin and run across its narrow and exposed ridge line with steep drop offs on either side. There are a few moments along the top of the fin where you need scramble up or down using your hands and feet, or complete a step across a gap. This unique portion of the trail is exposed, exciting, incredibly scenic, and photo opportunities appear with nearly every step. This section often slows down hikers and due to the terrain, it can be almost impossible to pass them. As you wait, or are forced to walk a bit, take it as an opportunity to admire the truly unique nature of the trail and snap some photos!

Is the Devil's Garden Primitive Loop suitable for jogging?

While the initial section of the Devil's Garden Trail leading to Landscape Arch is relatively easy, the Primitive Loop itself is generally not advisable or practical for jogging. The terrain involves significant scrambling over slickrock, navigating narrow ledges, and steep ascents and descents. It requires careful footing and often the use of hands for stability, making it better suited for hiking.

What is the terrain like on this trail?

The terrain on the Primitive Loop is rugged and varied. You'll encounter sandy sections, extensive slickrock requiring good grip, and narrow rock fins with drop-offs. There are also steep scrambles up and down sandstone formations. Route finding can be challenging, relying on cairns (piles of stones) to mark the way.

What natural landmarks can I see along the route?

This trail offers an incredible array of natural arches and formations. You'll pass by iconic features such as Tunnel Arch, Pine Tree Arch, the magnificent Landscape Arch, and the unique Double O Arch. You can also visit Black Arch Overlook and see the towering Dark Angel spire.

Where can I park for the Devil's Garden Primitive Loop?

The trailhead for the Devil's Garden Primitive Loop is located at the very end of the main scenic drive in Arches National Park, at the Devil's Garden Trailhead parking area. Parking can fill up very early, especially during peak season, so arriving before 7 AM or later in the afternoon is often recommended.

Do I need a permit or pay an entrance fee for this trail?

Yes, the Devil's Garden Primitive Loop is located within Arches National Park, which requires an entrance fee. Additionally, from April 1 to October 31, a timed entry reservation is required to enter the park between 7 AM and 4 PM. You can find more information on the National Park Service website.

Is the Devil's Garden Primitive Loop dog-friendly?

No, dogs are generally not allowed on the hiking trails in Arches National Park, including the Devil's Garden Primitive Loop. Pets are permitted only on paved roads, in parking areas, and in the campground. They must always be on a leash no longer than six feet.

What is the best time of year to hike this trail?

The best times to hike the Devil's Garden Primitive Loop are spring (April to May) and fall (September to October). During these seasons, temperatures are milder and more pleasant for hiking. Yes, several sections require special caution. The 'Fin-Walk' section to Double O Arch involves walking along narrow rock fins with significant drop-offs. There are also numerous slickrock sections that can be treacherous when wet or icy. Always pay close attention to cairns for navigation, as the trail can be indistinct in places.

Does the trail offer opportunities for solitude?
