View of Lac des Rousses from Le Noirmont des Français

Highlight • Viewpoint

Departing from La Cure, the Noirmont family hike route crosses a solitary, lush green meadow and a landscape dominated by gigantic fir trees. Located at the edge of the border with France, the summit of this “black mountain” of the Vaudois Jura reveals a panorama of great beauty.

Noirmont has two peaks on its own. The “Noirmont des Français” offers a beautiful view of the heights of the neighboring Jura and of the Lac des Rousses, located not far away. Twenty meters higher is the real summit of Noirmont, from where the panorama is breathtaking, with Lake Geneva and the Alps as stars.

Creux du Croue

Highlight • Gorge

Very beautiful valley. The running water dug the summit of the mountain until it formed a sort of basin. A small cabin in the center gives a truly picturesque and attractive look to the landscape. The path runs along the valley and gives a truly alpine character to this passage.

La Cure

Highlight • Settlement

La Cure is a Swiss town nestled against the border that the country shares with France. Following numerous changes to the borders, several buildings have the particularity of having one foot in Switzerland and the other in France. This is particularly the case of the Hotel Franco-Suisse located astride the border.

Note, the city has a train station where regular and daily trains arrive from Nyon.

Frequently Asked Questions

How challenging is the Le Noirmont trail loop?

The Le Noirmont trail loop is officially rated as moderate. While the ascent to the summit of Le Noirmont is technically easy, it can be a sustained climb. Some sections, especially those that might descend towards the Doubs river, can be more demanding, involving steep, narrow paths and even short, well-protected ladders. These more adventurous parts require good fitness and sturdy shoes. However, other routes in the area are considered family-friendly and easier, so the overall difficulty can vary depending on the specific path taken.

What kind of views can I expect along the route?

The trail offers impressive panoramic views, particularly from the summit of Le Noirmont. You'll also enjoy wide landscapes, vast pastures, and picturesque views of the Jura massif.

What unique natural features can I see on this hike?

A significant highlight is the Creux du Croue, a 150-meter-deep valley basin featuring a peat bog, which is particularly beautiful in autumn. You'll also encounter traditional dry stone walls and pastures dotted with interestingly shaped stones that blend harmoniously into the landscape. The trail is situated within the Jura Vaudois Regional Nature Park, emphasizing its natural beauty and ecological significance.

Is the Le Noirmont trail loop dog-friendly?

Yes, the trail is generally dog-friendly. However, as it's located within a nature reserve and often passes through pastures, it's crucial to keep dogs on a leash at all times. Be aware that you might encounter livestock guardian dogs in certain areas.

Do I need a permit or pay an entrance fee for the Parc Jura Vaudois?

No, there are typically no specific permits or entrance fees required to hike the Le Noirmont trail loop within the Parc Jura Vaudois. However, as it is a nature reserve, hikers are reminded to stay on marked paths to protect the natural environment.

What is the best time of year to hike this trail?

The trail can be enjoyed across multiple seasons. The Creux du Croue is particularly beautiful in autumn when the colors change. During spring and summer, the pastures are vibrant green. Be aware that at higher elevations, you might encounter patchy or real snow, especially outside of peak summer months. Always check local weather conditions before heading out.

Where can I park or access the trailhead by public transport?

While specific parking locations aren't detailed, trails in the Parc Jura Vaudois often have designated parking areas near popular starting points. For public transport, you might look for connections to nearby settlements like La Cure, which can serve as access points to the wider trail network.

Are there any specific highlights or landmarks to look out for?

Absolutely! Key highlights include the stunning View of Lac des Rousses from Le Noirmont des Français, the unique geological formation of Creux du Croue with its peat bog, and the charming settlement of La Cure. The summit of Le Noirmont itself is a major landmark offering expansive views.

Does this trail connect with other hiking routes?

What should I wear or bring for this hike?

Given the trail's moderate difficulty and varied terrain, sturdy hiking shoes are essential. Layers of clothing are recommended to adapt to changing weather conditions, especially at higher elevations where it can be cooler or windier. Bring enough water and snacks, as facilities might be limited along the route. Depending on the season, be prepared for potential snow patches.

Are there facilities like cafes or accommodation nearby?

Trail Reviews

Mike
July 23, 2024, Le Noirmont depuis la Cure

This tour is nice with moderate relief, and beautiful views in the first part of Les Rousses and Lake Geneva. Lac des Rousses remains barely visible due to the vegetation. You must follow the signposts placed here and there, and look for the yellow markings. Be careful, you can sometimes lose the markings when crossing the many fields. Along the route, there are a few detours due to certain small route errors or even to circumvent more widely herds guarded by dogs.
