The most enchanting time to experience this trail is between August and September, when the heather blooms and transforms the landscape into a vibrant purple carpet. However, the diverse terrain offers beautiful scenery year-round, from lush greens in spring to golden hues in autumn.
You can expect a varied and engaging terrain. The trail winds through sandy, dry heathlands, gently rolling hills, dense mixed forests, and open fields. You'll also encounter wetlands and follow rivers and streams. Be prepared for some relatively steep sections for Northern Germany, including ascents to the Wümmeberg and Suhorn, and the northern flank of the Tütsberg. Some paths may have roots and loose gravel.
No, this trail is categorized as a "Hard hike" and requires very good fitness and sure-footedness. With a distance of nearly 24 km and over 200 meters of elevation gain, it's not recommended for beginners or families with young children. There are easier trails available in the wider Lüneburg Heath Nature Park for those seeking a less challenging experience.
Yes, dogs are generally allowed on the Lüneburg Heath Dream Loop. However, as the trail passes through the Lüneburg Heath Nature Park, it is crucial to keep your dog on a leash at all times to protect the sensitive ecosystem and local wildlife, especially the Heidschnucken sheep.
No, there are generally no entrance fees or permits required to hike the Lüneburg Heath Dream Loop or other trails within the Lüneburg Heath Nature Park. The park is freely accessible to the public. However, please respect the park's regulations, such as staying on marked paths and keeping dogs on a leash, to preserve its natural beauty.
The trail offers several memorable sights. You'll pass by the iconic Wilseder Berg, which provides expansive views. Don't miss the Heather Bloom at Wilseder Berg during peak season, the Stone cairns on Wilseder Berg, and the stunning View from Wilseder Berg. You'll also get a fantastic View of Totengrund from the East, showcasing the unique heathland valleys.
The Lüneburg Heath Dream Loop is a circular trail, so you can start at various points. Common starting points with parking options are often found near villages like Undeloh or Niederhaverbeck, which are good access points for the car-free core zone of the Lüneburg Heath Nature Park. Specific parking details can vary, so it's advisable to check local signage or komoot's route planner for the most current information.
Yes, sections of the Lüneburg Heath Dream Loop overlap with other established routes. You'll find yourself on parts of the Heidschnuckenweg Etappe 4: Undeloh - Niederhaverbeck, the Heideschleife Radenbachtal, and the Freudenthalweg, among others. This allows for a diverse hiking experience and connects you to the broader network of trails in the region.
Given its length and difficulty, pack essentials for a full-day hike. This includes plenty of water, snacks, appropriate hiking boots with good ankle support for varied terrain, and layers of clothing suitable for changing weather conditions. Sun protection (hat, sunscreen) is important, especially in open heathland. A first-aid kit, navigation tools (like the komoot app), and a fully charged phone are also recommended.
While the core of the Lüneburg Heath Nature Park is largely car-free and focuses on natural preservation, you can find cafes and restaurants in the surrounding traditional heath villages, such as Undeloh or Niederhaverbeck. These are typically located near common starting points or access roads to the park, offering opportunities for refreshments before or after your hike.
Truly a dream tour with the best hiking weather in the Lüneburg Heath during the heyday.
A very beautiful, at times quite challenging, loop through the heath. 🥰 At one point, I lost count of how many tree roots I tripped over. 🤣
The Lüneburg Heath dream loop begins in Undeloh and leads through the unique Radenbach valley, over the Heidschnuckenweg with fantastic views of the original village of Wilsede, to Totengrund over the Kammweg down to Steingrund and to the landmark of the Lüneburg Heath: Wilseder Berg. A wonderful, varied dream loop, especially now when the heather is in bloom. Of course, we weren't the only ones who knew that, but it wasn't overcrowded. It was only at special viewpoints, such as Wilseder Berg, that it was a bit crowded.
Little adventure, but spectacularly beautiful - flora and fauna in a completely different way with fantastic views of the Lüneburg Heath. From almost 30°C to sunset at 19°C, an unforgettable path without a meter of asphalt and many huge oaks, narrow root paths, shade, sun, sandy soil and countless benches that invite you to dream - a stopover from the Baltic Sea that is more than worth it. The Heideschleife with a good 8 km Heidschnuckenweg is a true premium hiking trail, where the internet really doesn't promise too much. The tour will be remembered for a long time and will be gone the other way around at some point.
There are some places where you can let your soul dangle and completely forget your everyday life with all its worries for a certain moment. I was very lucky to be able to experience this on Fehmarn just last week. For eight days, my everyday life no longer played a role! Today there was another little escape from everyday life, a purple break...! Together with @Alex we walked 22 km through the heath today, a more than beautiful retreat to relax and enjoy. All in all, I'm proud to live in an area where thousands of tourists travel hundreds of kilometers every year to discover exactly this area...! Lüneburg with its historic old town, location of a successful telenovela of the Red Roses, university town and home to thousands of students and of course the many nature reserves around the Illmenau, which are best explored by bike ☺️ Have a nice Sunday 💕
That was the large heathland loop from Undeloh, Wilseder Berg, Steingrund, Totengrund, Wilsede, Pastor-Bode-Weg..., extended by the arch to the observation tower at Fürstengrab. A special attraction: finally snow on the heath again; that's something. The heathland is worth hiking not only when the heather is in bloom. If you don't mind the 24 km, you should try the dream loop.
Why is it called dawn 🤔? It really had nothing to do with horror 😉. Sometimes you just dread the weather forecast🙄.... it didn't say anything about so many clouds. Well, still a nice sunrise hike. This time I had my big camera 📷 with me. A lot to carry, but with the camera mount on the backpack 🎒 it went quite well. The heather blossom has also increased a lot 🌺🌺🌺😊
Leaving Undeloh, you immediately dive into wide expanses of heath. Juniper bushes of various shapes and sizes grow to the right and left of the path. Long live diversity! You cross the beautiful Radenbachtal. If you are lucky (we were 😊), you will spot the well-known Dülmen horses, which are genetically closest to the original wild horse. In the Lüneburg Heath, these horses are used for landscape maintenance. Shortly before Wilsede there is the possibility to turn into Totengrund. The Totengrund is one of the most beautiful heath valleys in the Lüneburg Heath. He absolutely flashed me 🥰 If you have completed an extra lap around the Totengrund, the well-deserved reward beckons in Wilsede. In the "Milchhalle" there is a variety of hot & cold dishes and drinks, so that no wish should remain unfulfilled and no stomach should be empty (my cheesecake was delicious😉). Freshly strengthened, the ascent to the Wilseder Berg (169 m) is immediately easier. From here you can enjoy a fantastic all-round view. Anyone who has fed too much in the milk hall can simply roll down the Wilseder Berg. The momentum would probably not reach Niederhaverbeck, because it's a few kilometers 😊 My personal highlight was the Totengrund, because it really cast a spell over me. And on the other hand, we were able to see live Heidschnucke sheep for the first time today. Really cute little animals 😍
