You can typically find parking available near the Bosmuseum (Forest Museum) in Gerhagen, which serves as a common starting point for trails in the area. This is also where you can access resources like the 'silence map' and 'silence backpack'.
While specific public transport routes can vary, the Gerhagen Nature Reserve is located in Tessenderlo, Belgium. It's advisable to check local bus schedules or train connections to Tessenderlo, and then plan for a short taxi ride or walk to the trailhead, as direct public transport to the reserve entrance might be limited. Always check current timetables before your trip.
Yes, dogs are generally welcome on the Gerhagen - Stiltepad. However, to preserve the serene 'silence area' atmosphere and protect local wildlife, it's important to keep your dog on a leash at all times and clean up after them.
The Gerhagen - Stiltepad can be enjoyed year-round. Spring offers blooming flora and active birdlife, while autumn provides beautiful fall colors. Summer is pleasant for walking through the forests, and even winter can offer a unique, quiet experience. For the most comfortable hiking, spring and early autumn are often ideal.
No, there are no specific permits or entrance fees required to access the Gerhagen Nature Reserve or to hike the Gerhagen - Stiltepad. It is freely accessible to the public.
Yes, the trail is considered easy and is very suitable for beginners, families, and those looking for a gentle walk. It features minimal elevation gain and offers both a shorter 3.5 km and a longer 6 km option, making it accessible for various fitness levels.
The terrain is diverse and generally easy to navigate. You'll encounter a mix of natural paths, unpaved sections, gravel, and some asphalt and paved sections. The varied surfaces add to the natural experience without being overly challenging.
The most unique aspect is its designation as Flanders' first 'Recognized Quiet Area'. The trail is designed for quiet reflection, encouraging hikers to focus on nature's sounds. You can borrow a free 'silence map' and 'silence backpack' from the Bosmuseum, which includes tools like binoculars and a 'daydream book' to enhance your meditative experience. Don't miss the 'daydream bench' (mijmerbank) for a reflective stop.
You can expect a varied and natural landscape, including dense forests, open heathland, and fens. The trail passes through the larger Gerhagen and Merode forests, offering a rich natural environment with diverse flora and fauna, particularly noted for its birdlife.
Absolutely! Keep an eye out for the Pinnekensweier Pond and Wet Heathland, a restored fen area that enhances the moist heathland surroundings. There's also a scenic Bench With View of Gerhagen Heath, offering a lovely spot for a break. Additionally, a 19-meter high observation tower in the wider Gerhagen area provides expansive views of the wooded surroundings.
Yes, the route incorporates sections of several other trails. You'll find it overlaps with the Stiltepad Gerhagen Blauw, Stiltepad Gerhagen Groen, and parts of the GR 561 Kempen - Maaspad, among others, offering connections to a wider network of paths within the Gerhagen area.
#province of Limburg #tessenderlo Beautiful winter walk in the snow ❄☃️ in Gerhagen in Tessenderlo. There are various walking routes possible, this time we did the blue silence path, a walk of 6 km, almost completely unpaved. Normal starting point: Nest box wall opposite the Forest Museum, Zavelberg 10, 3980 Tessenderlo. We started from the parking lot at Heggebossenweg, and from there we first went to the off-leash dog park. Follow the blue signs for a quiet path. There is also a green silence path of 3.5 km. At the back of the Forest Museum there is also a playground and an observation tower. For Komoot: we went through the off-leash dog forest for a bit instead of past it, and later on the walk we also took an alternative route (which was now super beautiful in the snow), but you can also just follow the signs.
Nice route. No idea why they call it the silent route. There are quite a few birds to hear. 🥰 had to cut a small piece due to flooding.
