Klausen Pass

Highlight • Mountain Pass

The Klausen Pass is a well-known pass that takes you up to 1948 meters. It was not until 1899 that the first road on the Klausenpass was completed and in 1900 the first stagecoach drove over the pass. In 1916, the Urner Landsgemeinde decided to ban traffic, which was canceled a year later. From 1922 the coach was replaced by the "Car alpin", the postbus. This also started the era of the legendary Oldtiemer race over the Klausen.

From the Schwyzer side, the ascent leads through the enchanting Schächental with its imposing view of the Stäubifall. On the Glarner side Ortstock, Gemfairenstock and Clariden form an impressive backdrop and on the slightly shallower Urenerboden you can relax a bit before the final climb.

As part of the "Klausen Pragel free pass", the pass will be closed to traffic from Unterschächen on 22 and 23 September for more than 35 kilometers.

Pass Facts during the "free pass":

On weekends, the pass is closed to motorized traffic and is only available to cyclists.

Brunnen Promenade on Lake Lucerne

Highlight • Viewpoint

Many roads converge in Brunnen, which is beautifully situated on Lake Lucerne, making it a good starting point, rest stop or destination for a tour of Central Switzerland.

Important and good to know for cyclists: The well-known Axenstrasse between Brunnen and Altdorf is currently being renovated and is therefore closed to bicycles. However, there is a free shuttle bus that runs between Brunnen and Sisikon. This means that the closed part of the road can still be included in a tour. Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to cycle the Klausen and Pragel Pass route?

This challenging racebike tour typically takes around 6 to 7 hours of active cycling time. However, with stops to enjoy the incredible views and refuel, you should plan for a full day.

What is the best time of year to cycle this route?

The best time to cycle the Klausen and Pragel Pass is generally from late spring to early autumn, typically June through September. During these months, the passes are usually clear of snow, and the weather is more stable. Weekends are particularly recommended for the Pragel Pass, as it's closed to motorized traffic, offering a much quieter cycling experience.

What is the terrain and difficulty like for this racebike tour?

This is a difficult racebike tour requiring very good fitness. The route features significant climbs and descents. The Klausen Pass has a long, steady ascent with an average gradient of 6.1%, mostly on asphalt, though some early sections have historic cobblestone. The Pragel Pass is considerably more challenging, especially the western approach from Muotathal with gradients consistently around 16-18%. The western descent is also notoriously steep and narrow with poor asphalt.

Where can I park and start the tour?

While the tour can be started from various points, common starting points include Altdorf for the Klausen Pass or Glarus for the Pragel Pass. Parking is available in these towns. For the Pragel Pass, if you're approaching from the west (Muotathal), be aware that the initial climb is very steep.

Are there any permits or entrance fees required to cycle the passes?

No, there are no specific permits or entrance fees required to cycle either the Klausen Pass or the Pragel Pass. Both are public roads, though the Pragel Pass has weekend closures for motorized traffic, which is a bonus for cyclists.

What are the main highlights and viewpoints along the route?

You'll encounter stunning alpine scenery throughout. Key highlights include the panoramic views from the Klausen Pass, the unique high-alpine plateau at Urnerboden, and numerous waterfalls. The Pragel Pass offers incredible views of the Muota Valley and the beautiful Klöntalersee, with mountains rising steeply around it. You might even spot cows grazing on the road!

Is this route suitable for beginners or families?

No, this combined Klausen and Pragel Pass route is not suitable for beginners or families. It is classified as 'difficult' and requires very good fitness due to its significant distance, elevation gain, and challenging gradients, especially on the Pragel Pass. There are much gentler cycling options available in the region for less experienced riders.

Is the Klausen and Pragel Pass route dog-friendly?

While dogs are generally allowed on public roads, this route is a demanding racebike tour. It's not designed for walking dogs, and the long distances and challenging terrain would be unsuitable for most dogs. If you're cycling, bringing a dog would require specialized equipment like a bike trailer, but the focus of this tour is on challenging road cycling.

Are there places to eat or stay along the way?

Yes, there are various guesthouses, restaurants, and cafes in the villages at the base of the passes and sometimes at the pass summits themselves. It's advisable to check opening times, especially during off-peak seasons, and plan your stops accordingly.

Does the route intersect with other well-known trails?

Yes, the route also passes through sections of the Alpine Panorama Route, Suworow-Route, Pragelpass-Weg, and Via Alpina, among others. These are official trails that share parts of the road network.

What should I know about descending the Pragel Pass?

If you are descending the Pragel Pass, the eastern side (towards Glarus) is generally preferable. The western descent (towards Muotathal) is notoriously difficult, featuring narrow roads, poor asphalt, very steep sections (up to 18% or more for 12 km), and often cow droppings, making it a challenging and potentially hazardous descent.

After I had already done the rounds over the Klausenpass and the Pragelpass a few weeks ago, the opportunity arose again this week. But now the Pragelpass from Altdorf was tackled first and it felt completely different. The borderline gradients of up to 24% weren't as bad as the first time I drove up the Klausen Pass... So in summary... very successful day, clear recommendation, I will probably do it again...VG Henrik

Fantastic round, highly recommended because there was relatively little traffic and the landscape is very varied. Magnificent mountain scenery, then Lake Lucerne and another impressive mountain scenery. The Pragel Pass from the side I chose kicks off your shoes. The first half does not fall below 10 percent. Sometimes between 18 - 22 percent and not just as a ramp...

What a lap over the Klausen and Pragel passes and again without exhaust fumes! The best weather and a landscape like in a fairy tale picture book (unfortunately I didn't have enough time to take some nice photos). I came to alpine descent several times and then it only went downhill at walking pace. One of the nicest tours I've ever done, apart from the Axenstrasse. It's a pretty sore business. The section is made smarter by train or ship!

@d | OPA / min Many thanks to you, I admired your tour last night and took your comment to heart... it's better to start the Pragelpass from the other side👍, it went really well👌 It wasn't until Klausen, when I took a wrong turn and also had to cross a few 15 plus ramps and finally across the meadow, that (almost) gave me the rest...🤪 And it's just an incredibly beautiful mountain world 🥰🍀☀️ Greetings Ueli 🤗

I had already done the loop in the other direction last year, so I already knew what was in store for me on the Pragel Pass. Old Swede, up to almost the top, the percentages don't fall into the single-digit range, but are often preceded by a 2. The road is one lane and the pavement is more like Swiss cheese. But I have to admit, I liked this site better, equally crisp and "adventurous". The Klausen from Glarus was nice, but the other direction is somehow more spectacular.
