Cycling

Cycle the Abenstal and the largest contiguous hop growing area in the world with the Stromtreter-Abenstal-Holledau Tour!

From Abensberg it goes first in the direction of Biburg and with a little luck you can see storks across the Abensauen at the pilgrimage church Allersdorf. The first hop fields then lead to the Biburg Monastery Church, one of the most important Romanesque monuments in the region.

Past the Redeemer Chapel, a work of art by Angerer the Elder, we head back out into the wet meadows of the Abensauen to Siegenburg and then on to Ratzenhofen. One of the most beautiful beer gardens in the Hallertau is waiting for you here: directly at the Ratzenhofen Castle and in a rustic Bavarian setting under expansive chestnuts.

Via Elsendorf it goes through the rolling hills of the Hallertau past deserted farms and extensive hop gardens. Some sporty climbs ensure a varied circular tour before returning to Abensberg.

Tip: From Elsendorf, a detour towards Mitterstetten and Horneck is worthwhile in order to enjoy an impressive view of the hop fields in the Hallertau hop sky.

Pilgrimage Church Allersdorf

Highlight • Religious Site

The pilgrimage church, which lies on a hill, can be reached via stairs on its north and south sides. Around the church is a small cemetery, surrounded by the 17th-century churchyard wall. On the south slope of the hill, the presbytery was built in 1845 in the Biedermeier style, a two-story building with a flat hipped roof.

At the foot of the hill, there are also ten baroque chapels of Mary, dedicated to various Marian festivals and forms of Marian devotion. They form a wreath around the pilgrimage church; only in the east and northeast, where the forest cover is denser, were no chapels built.

Biburg Monastery Church

Highlight • Religious Site

The Roman Catholic parish church of Maria Immaculata was consecrated in 1133, making it one of the oldest churches in Bavaria. The Biburg monastery church is a former monastery church of the Benedictines, Jesuits and the Maltese. The church's furnishings are worth seeing; the baptismal font, made of limestone around 1200, dates from the Romanesque period.

Redeemer Chapel, Biburg

Highlight • Religious Site

Chapel of the Redeemer - Really great. A brilliant atmosphere between hope and fear (heaven & hell). It's a pity that you can't get the overall picture on the photo and then with the right incidence of light. Just great.

Train Moated Castle

Highlight • Castle

There are only a few moated castles in the wider area and so the small and fine moated castle in Train is a change from the usual castles built on hills and rocks.

The Offenstetten Castle is very beautiful and has a very nice castle garden. The Cabrini House, a special school for children, is housed in the castle.
