Rax Cable Car Mountain Station

Highlight • Rest Area

Excellent, but also very busy starting point for tours on the Rax Plateau. The extensive snowshoe rental service in winter means that there are often whole hordes of people on the section between the mountain station and Praterstern. From the Ottohaus onwards, however, the crowds disperse.

It is best to book cable car rides online. On site, you can easily rebook the ascent and descent at the machine.

South of the Great Höllental a ridge over the Preinerwand (1783 m above sea level) to Reichenau. The area to Höllental is also heavily divided into ridges and valleys.

Ottohaus Mountain Lodge

Highlight • Mountain Hut

The classic climb to the Rax plateau (and many other routes) takes you to the central Otto-Schutzhaus. A legend and definitely worth a visit. Right behind the house is the Jakobskogel, which is worth climbing just for the wonderful view.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difficulty and required fitness level for this hike?

This trail is considered moderate and requires good fitness and sure-footedness. While much of it is walkable, it includes exposed and partially secured passages with steel cables and footholds, particularly on the Preinerwandsteig section. Sturdy hiking shoes are essential, and beginners or children might consider full via ferrata equipment, including a helmet.

Are there any permits or entrance fees required for hiking in the Rax-Schneeberg Group?

No, there are generally no specific permits or entrance fees required to hike this trail or within the Rax-Schneeberg Group. However, always check local regulations before your visit, especially if planning to access private land or specific protected areas.

What is the best time of year to hike to the Preinerwand Peak?

The trail can be hiked year-round. However, caution is advised in spring due to potential snow conditions on exposed sections. For the most pleasant experience and clear views, late spring through early autumn is generally recommended.

Is this trail dog-friendly?

While dogs are generally allowed on trails in the Rax-Schneeberg Group, it's crucial to keep them on a leash, especially due to the exposed sections and potential for wildlife encounters. Be aware that some parts of the trail, particularly the secured passages, might be challenging for dogs.

Where can I park and access the trailhead?

The trail is easily accessible, often starting near the Rax Cable Car. Specific parking information can vary, but generally, there are designated parking areas at the base of the Rax Cable Car or in nearby villages like Prein an der Rax. Public transport options are also available to reach the Rax area from Vienna.

What kind of terrain can I expect on the route?

You will encounter varied terrain, including steep ascents through forests, scree fields dotted with mountain pines, and alpine sections. The path consists of gravel, unpaved, and natural surfaces. Be prepared for rocky and potentially exposed sections, especially on the Preinerwandsteig.

What are the main viewpoints and landmarks along the trail?

The trail offers spectacular views. Key highlights include the Gatterlkreuz with vistas of the Rax, and the Höllental Viewpoint offering a dramatic perspective of the Great Höllental. The Preinerwand Summit Cross provides a striking panoramic view over the Vienna Basin and surrounding valleys.

Are there any huts or places to get refreshments along the way?

Yes, there are mountain huts available. The trail passes by the historic Ottohaus Mountain Lodge, a central starting point for many Rax plateau tours. You'll also find the idyllically situated New Lake Hut on the Rax plateau, perfect for a break.

Does this trail intersect with other well-known hiking paths?

Yes, this route intersects with several other trails. Notable sections include parts of the Wiener Alpenbogen, Seehütte - Preinerwand-Kreuz - Ottohaus, Nordalpenweg 01, and the NÖ Landesrundwanderweg. You'll also find sections of Wanderweg 801 and the Preinerwandsteig.

What should I bring for this hike?

Given the moderate difficulty and varied terrain, sturdy hiking boots are essential. We recommend bringing sufficient water, snacks, and appropriate layers of clothing for changing weather conditions. For beginners or those less experienced with exposed sections, via ferrata equipment including a helmet is advisable.

Is the Preinerwandsteig a via ferrata, and what is its difficulty?

The Preinerwandsteig is considered the easiest via ferrata to the Preinerwand peak, with a difficulty rating of A/B. This means it features only a few secured passages, and much of the terrain is walkable. However, it still requires sure-footedness and a head for heights in some sections.

July 20, 2022, Runde auf der Rax

To escape the heat in the valley, we decided to go to the Rax. We copied @Alfred🏕️🧘🏼‍♂️'s tour from July 3rd, 2022 and followed it. From the mountain station we went to the Höllental viewpoint. The view here is simply fantastic. Then we continued towards the new Seehütte (former Holzknechthütte) and from here to the summit cross on the Preiner Wand. On the way back to the mountain station, we made a detour to the Jakobskogel summit cross. A highlight of this hike were the many edelweiss - I have never seen/found so many. It was a very nice lap, really few people and the heat was bearable. The temperature on the Rax was not much more than 23 degrees and there was always a light breeze. Thank you @Alfred🏕️🧘🏼‍♂️ for encouraging this round.

Today's destination was the Rax. We wanted to escape from the heat. Thank you Alfred for your inspiration. We didn't leave as usual, but followed your tour. It was quite pleasant on the mountain at 23 degrees. I've never been to the Rax in July, but mostly in late autumn. That's why I was so happy about my first edelweiss that I found myself. But there are so many. I stopped counting at the 30th edelweiss. The flowers and the many butterflies - there was no progress. I haven't taken so many photos on a hike in a long time. So Rax is always a great experience and with the NÖ-Card the ride on the Rax cable car is free.

In "crazy" ☀️weather, I took advantage of the No-Card👌🏼🤩.

With the cable car to the mountain station and first to the Höllental viewpoint. A bit back and then via a meadow path to the gravel path in the direction of Neue Seehütte. In front of the Seehütte left up to the Preinerwand cross, spotting some edelweiss. Along the wall to the Friedenskreuz - Otto-Haus and back to the mountain station.

Take the cable car uphill and then over the Ottohaus to the Freedom Cross and Preinerwand Cross to the Seewiesen Hut. Directly back to the Ottohaus and with a detour to the Höllental view (recommended) back to the mountain station of the cable car.

Perfect day for the annual Rax Tour. We reserved cable car tickets the day before, which was smart, since we weren't the only ones today 😄 We have more than enough time for the tour. We take a few breaks to admire the scenery and also go to the viewpoint over the Höllental Valley, a worthwhile detour. On the way home, we make a quick detour to the Salettl in Lilienfeld. A very nice pub right on the Traisen River, with a bathing jetty—I brought my swimsuit—and a cozy summer evening atmosphere. A worthy conclusion 😊🍹

Somehow komoot 135 m is too low. Does anyone have an idea why?🤔 @all

Today in dream weather the traditional Rax run took place on the Rax. Pretty bad as some can torment themselves. But it wasn't a handicap, it was nice to watch. We were also able to observe many paragliders who screwed their way through the great thermals into the sky🪂 The meadows were full of extremely many blooming flowers, it smelled wonderfully. 😱A black adder, also known as hell viper (poisonous), ran across the way 😬
