Hiking

On this circular hike, you will circle the spectacular Lünersee in the Brandnertal. Impressive views over the crystal-clear mountain lake and the surrounding mountains will inspire you. There are also several places to stop for a break on the six-kilometer-long hike.

You start the tour at the mountain station of the Lünerseebahn. Sporty hikers can also tackle the 400 meters of altitude from the valley station to the top. Everyone else can take the cable car up comfortably. The Douglasshütte is spectacularly located right next to the mountain station, on the edge of the dam. You can stop here either before or after the circular route. If you do the tour clockwise, you will first have to climb a small hill. Then it goes gently downhill to the end.

On the way to the south bank, there are impressive views of the lake with the Schesaplana behind it, almost 3,000 meters high. The route goes along the bank to the Alpe Lünersee, where you can stop for a break. On the western shore of the lake you will pass a former customs house and return to the starting point of the hike. Once there you can take the cable car back down to the valley.

Douglass Hut at Lake Lünersee

Highlight • Mountain Hut

Located right next to the Lünerseebahn mountain station, the Douglasshütte is a restaurant with a large panoramic terrace. From here, you can enjoy a fantastic view of the lake. However, on nice days, it's not easy to get a seat.

Lake Lüner

Highlight • Lake

The Lünersee is one of the largest lakes in the Austrian province of Vorarlberg in the municipality of Vandans.
It lies at an altitude of 1970 m above sea level. A. at the foot of the Schesaplana. In 1959 Vorarlberger Illwerke AG enlarged the storage volume of the lake with a dam; since then it has been using the water to generate electricity in the Lünersee plant. Through an artificial tunnel, the lake is fed by the meltwater of the Brandner glacier. The processed water of Lake Lüner is cached in the reservoir Latschau.
The net capacity of Lünersee amounts to 78.3 million m³ (water surface 1.55 km²). This corresponds to about 262 million kWh of stored energy. The water depth is well over 50 meters.
The area around the lake forms the valley end of the Brandnertal valley, which can only be reached via narrow paths or the Lünerseebahn from the Schattenlagant area. Directly at the mountain station at the dam is the Douglasshütte, which serves as a snack and overnight accommodation for hikers.

Trail Reviews

Horst aus Homberg
July 27, 2024, Lüner See-Runde

Austria 2025: This family hike begins – as is often the case in the Montafon – with a cable car ride uphill, the Lünerseebahn. Attentive hikers will be treated to a special treat: a chamois nest in the rock. Excuse me? Well, that's how tourists are "pulled." However, the "nest" is now heavily overgrown and difficult to spot. Once at the top, there is a fantastic view of one of the largest natural reservoirs, the Lünersee. On the approximately two-hour, family-friendly trail around the lake, you'll discover a colorful sea of alpine flowers. The circular trail becomes somewhat more challenging towards the end until you reach the Douglasshütte inn.

From our hotel in Tschagguns it takes about 15 minutes to walk to the train station in Schruns. We took the train to Bludenz and took the country bus towards Brand and on to the valley station of the Lünerseebahn. The cable car, one of 3 mountain railways that will be in operation until mid-October. With an area of 155 hectares, Lünersee is the largest natural lake in the High Alps. It is 140 meters deep and is a Ice Age formation. The lake can be easily circumnavigated on a 7 km long path in around 2 hours. The tip to hike the loop clockwise has proven itself.

We took the cable car up to the Lünersee (almost 2000m above sea level). Great circular walk around the lake - unfortunately the weather didn't play along at the end 🤷🏼‍♀️

A look at the weather app and then the various webcams didn't actually bode well... but fortunately only actually 😉 The choice then fell on Silbertal or Brandnertal with Lünersee. On the autobahn there was a small gap in the clouds in the direction of Brandtal, so it was Lünersee 😀 A good choice, as it turned out. Really, really great mystical atmosphere with the fog that kept creeping up. Sometimes you couldn't see the opposite side. It's seldom that you're so deserted on the road. It was totally worth it 😍

Family fun hike around Lake Lünersee. After it Friday and Saturday. rained heavily. We were able to do the wonderful thing today. Panorama of the Lünersee with the sun. illuminated, snowy. Enjoy mountain peaks. Of course the kids and the dog had a great time. with enthusiasm in the snow. out of.

Just before our last day up to the Lünersee. Lünerseebahn winter break from October 28th, 2024 - approx. May 20th, 25. How lucky that the weather played along and we were able to experience a brilliantly beautiful day up here, albeit with a storm warning of 40 - 60 km/h. The last time we were up here was five years ago with two of our grandchildren and we still had the best memories of everything. As the day went on, it cleared up and the sky competed with the lake for the most beautiful blue. The turquoise of the lake was so incredible today that I couldn't stop taking photos 📷😁. A new discovery were the sculptures installed by Marcel Dengel, which unfortunately will only be on display up here temporarily. What an exhibition space at 2,000 m altitude 🤩. The sculptures have already been exhibited in the most curious places around the world. Informative video: https://www.masirati.com/

On the third attempt, it worked: I finally made it to Lünersee in perfect weather without any rain. The lake is currently quite low in water, which offers a completely different view. It's expected to be filled again next week.

The mountain railway costs €18.90 ascent and descent, and the parking lot €4 per day! But at the top a magnificent sight awaits you and a nice hike. 👍
