Soilasee (silted-up lake)

Highlight • Lake

This idyllic mountain lake is in the middle of nowhere and therefore offers you the full program of peace, seclusion, nature and relaxation. The lake is not really suitable for swimming. The water level also varies depending on the season. Nevertheless, this place is just awesome and invites you to visit.

Frequently Asked Questions

How difficult is the Laber-Manndl round?

Komoot rates this hike as "difficult" due to its steep sections and rocky terrain. While the overall loop is often considered moderate, the detour to the Ettaler Mandl involves a light via ferrata (A/B) that requires sure-footedness and a lack of fear of heights. Hikers should have good physical condition and appropriate gear.

What is the terrain like on this hike?

The trail features mixed terrain, including forest paths, steep climbs, and rocky sections. You'll encounter narrow mountain paths, switchbacks, and some wider gravel roads. The detour to the Ettaler Mandl includes secured climbing parts. You'll also pass by the Soilasee, which can be dry in summer.

What scenic viewpoints and landmarks can I expect along the route?

You'll be treated to magnificent panoramic views throughout the hike. Highlights include the View from the summit station of the Laber Mountain cable car, offering extensive vistas of the Ammergau Alps and beyond. The Ettaler Mandl Summit provides a unique perspective, and you'll also enjoy a View of Ettaler Manndl and Laber. On clear days, you might even see as far as Munich and prominent peaks like the Zugspitze.

Where can I park for the Laber-Manndl round, and how do I access the trailhead?

The hike typically starts at the mountain station of the Laber mountain railway. You can park at the valley station of the Laber Bergbahn in Oberammergau and take the nostalgic gondola up to the starting point at 1684 meters. This unique two-cable gondola is a highlight in itself.

What is the best time of year to hike this trail?

The rich flora makes spring and summer particularly enchanting. However, the trail offers stunning views year-round. Be aware that the Soilasee may be dry in summer. Winter hiking is possible but requires appropriate gear and caution due to snow and ice conditions, especially on steeper sections and the Ettaler Manndl detour.

Is the Laber-Manndl round dog-friendly?

While dogs are generally allowed on trails in the Ammergau Alps, the Laber-Manndl round includes sections with steep, rocky terrain and a light via ferrata to the Ettaler Mandl. These parts might be challenging or unsafe for some dogs. Consider your dog's agility and comfort with such conditions before bringing them on the full loop, especially the detour.

Are there any permits or entrance fees required for hiking in the Ammergau Alps Nature Park?

No, there are generally no specific permits or entrance fees required for hiking the Laber-Manndl round or other trails within the Ammergau Alps Nature Park. However, you will need to purchase a ticket for the Laber mountain railway to access the trailhead at the summit station.

Are there places to eat or get refreshments along the trail?

Yes, at the summit station of the Laber mountain railway, you can enjoy refreshments and expansive views at the mountain restaurant "Die Laberei" before or after your hike. There are no other official refreshment stops directly on the trail itself, so it's advisable to carry sufficient water and snacks.

What should I pack for the Laber-Manndl round?

Given the mixed terrain and potential for steep, rocky sections, sturdy hiking boots with good ankle support are essential. We recommend bringing layers of clothing, rain gear, plenty of water, snacks, a first-aid kit, and a map or GPS device. If you plan to tackle the Ettaler Mandl detour, consider bringing a via ferrata set for added safety, though it's a light (A/B) route.

Does this route intersect with other trails?

Yes, the route partially follows and intersects with several other trails. You will find sections that are part of the "Mandlweg" and the "BT 10 Ettaler Mandl". The adventurous detour to the summit also includes parts of the "Klettersteig Ettaler Mandl".

What is the Ettaler Manndl detour, and is it mandatory?

The Ettaler Mandl detour is an adventurous side trip to the Ettaler Mandl Summit, involving a light via ferrata (categorized as A/B) with secured climbing parts. It offers spectacular views but requires sure-footedness and a lack of fear of heights. This detour is not mandatory; the main Laber-Manndl loop can be completed without it, making the hike more accessible for those who prefer to avoid climbing sections.

Family autumn hike to and on the Ettaler Manndl. Start in Oberammergau, then take the Laber cable car to the mountain station and hike a loop from there. A nice stopover was the Soilasee, even if it was dry at that time of year (more of a wet meadow in the valley). At the Ettaler Manndl itself, a via ferrata leads to the summit. The path is quite easy, but some parts are a bit exposed. So next time, it's better to wear climbing harnesses. From there, we went back to the mountain station and treated ourselves to Kaiserschmarrn before the cable car took us back to the valley station in Oberammergau.

With the Laberbergbahn 🚠 up to the Laber⛰️ 👌 ... already enjoyed the fascinating view at the 😋☕️ 💚 ... actually we had planned to go over the 🧗‍♂️🧗‍♀️ to the Manndl ⛰️ ... but it was just too crowded for us 🤦 ... so we only walked the circular route 🥾🥾 💥 ... this path is incredibly beautiful, breathtaking and offers many wonderful views, numerous benches to linger and relax 💚 💚💚 ... but it is also quite challenging, very rocky and there are lots of roots ... the path is very varied, sometimes open skies (it was pretty hot today 🥵) and then again pleasant and cool through forests 🌳🌲🌳 ... it was a fantastic tour 😍💥 There and back to 🚠 👣3 km 🚠 the Laber cable car is a two-cable gondola lift, has a length of 2021 meters. It was built between 1955 and 1957. 🚠 Up and down journey per person €21.50, with guest ticket €20

In the opposite direction the path should be a bit easier!
