This trail to the foot of Goldensides Mountain is one of the most popular trails in Tombstone Territorial Park. And rightly so, as this family-friendly trail offers great views of the Dempster Highway, the North Klondike Valley, Tombstone Mountain and the mountains to the west.

You can park your car just a few minutes from the Tombstone Campground and follow a wide forest road. The panorama that opens up from here is superb – two viewpoints, one adorned by a photogenic rock pillar, allow you to drink in the beauty of the surrounding landscape.

At the turning point, the striking peaks of Mount Robert Henderson and Mount Chester Henderson rise ahead. The return follows your outward path, but there’s still plenty to see. Keep your eyes peeled for birds, including the cheeky white-crowned sparrow. In clear conditions, you should even be able to see the distant summit of Mount Monolith – an awesome sight.

A few years ago, the trailhead was located approximately two kilometers east and some maps may still show the location as the trailhead. The current trailhead provides an information board and a picnic bench – along with already stunning views. From here, follow a dirt road that turns into a trail.

Even the journey to Tombstone Park via the Dempster Highway is a small adventure. The dirt road with its many potholes should be driven with caution, especially in wet conditions. Tombstone Park as a whole is a highlight! If you are lucky enough to enjoy the park with some sun in the fall, you will be surprised by a variety of colors. The tundra has its own special charm. It would be worth exploring the park on foot over several days with the appropriate equipment. Right at the entrance to the park you can get expert advice in the visitor center. We didn't see any bears, reindeer (caribou) or moose that day, but apparently there are some in the park.
