Hiking

Dawson City is one of the iconic gold mining towns on the Yukon River. On this Tour, you’ll walk along the banks of the majestic river, where there’s so much more to discover than just the rushing water. This route is part of the Trans Canada Trail, a network of paths that spans the whole of Canada.

Starting on the northern edge of the town, the route takes you to the car ferry across the Yukon. From here, you’ll walk through Waterfront Park, where colourful houses form a photogenic backdrop. The S. S. Keno, an old stern-wheel steamer that used to transport tonnes of ore on the Yukon, is also moored here. If you’d like to hop on board, you can do so on the Klondike Spirit, the only ship of its kind still travelling on the Yukon.

After about 2 kilometres (1.2 mi), you’ll reach the Tr'ochek Overlook, the turning point of the Tour. The view from here is particularly impressive. You then have the option to take the same route back, or to seize the opportunity to explore the town more intimately.

Dawson City at the Yukon River

Highlight • Settlement

Dawson City was founded during the legendary gold rush in 1896 and is located at the mighty Yukon River close to the confluence with the Klondike River. Many of the old buildings have been restored and make for a great scenery! There is a museum, some great hiking trails and you can even ride one of the last paddlewheelers, the "Klondike Spirit". The small town is also a popular destination for adventurers floating down the Yukon from Whitehorse.

There are some hotels that are open year-round and an RV park.

S.S. Keno National Historic Site

Highlight • Historical Site

The S. S. Keno, today located at the Waterfront Park, was built in 1922 and was part of the sternwheelers fleeted that operated along the Yukon River and lakes – especially during the gold rush. These boats were able to navigate through the shallow waters to transport ore like gold, silver, lead, and zinc. The keno carried more than 9,000 tons of ore in 1938 from the mining area at Mayo Landing.

The ship was transported to Dawson City in 1960 and you can explore the sternwheeler during a guided tour. Tickets are available at the Visitor Information Centre.
