Hiking

On the Erzweg Mitte, starting at Mücke train station and circling the town, you can still see the relics of the mining that took place until the 1960s. Remains of the former operating facilities, such as the loading tower between Merlau and Nieder-Ohmen, loading ramps, cable car foundations and mud ponds, are reminders of the iron ore mining that has been going on for around a hundred years.

Twelve information boards along the path explain the mines, the working conditions, the mining techniques and the geology in a concise and descriptive manner. Along the Ils to the half-filled Ilsdorf mine, passing the Wadenhäuser mill, where the path turns onto the large mud pond at the former Luse ore washery, the path continues on meadow and forest paths with beautiful views over the valley floor to Flensungen and then back to the starting point.

Old Cableway Route (Erzweg Mitte, Mücke)

Highlight • Trail

The progressive technical development in the second half of the 19th century with its modern means of transport, railway, mine railway and cable car, made the industrial exploitation of the local ore deposits logistically and economically possible in the first place. Cable cars in particular were an indispensable means of transport in the heyday of iron ore mining in Upper Hesse.

Ore Trail: Former Ilsdorf Mine

Highlight • Historical Site

Around Ilsdorf, especially between the Ilsdorf pit and the B49, you can find brown-red chunks of ore when the fields are freshly plowed and the rain has washed the stones free.
This was perhaps one of the reasons why exploratory shafts were sunk west and east of Ilsdorf in the years from 1868 onwards. The mighty brown iron deposits identified were each several hundred meters long and up to 150 m wide. Lumpy ore was laboriously mined by hand through these shafts.

Grube Ludwigsegen

Highlight • Historical Site

Mighty ore deposits were found here as early as 1855 and mined with great interruptions, both in opencast mines and via shafts and tunnels.
It was not until 1935 that systematic ore mining began in large-scale open-cast mining. Mining ended in 1957 when the deposit was exhausted.
In the final phase of ore mining in Mücke, a large part of the Ludwigssegen pit could no longer be completely backfilled because no new overburden was available. Today it is used as a foundation pond for the municipality of Mücke.

Unfortunately, we once again had a GPS file from a person who often didn't follow the signs... But these were so good that you can actually walk the route without support 👍
Hike is nice... apart from a longer piece of asphalt 😌

Since we were partly on wet, frozen and thawed meadows and dirt roads, sturdy shoes are recommended.
I would have wished for a few more benches, because the best times were behind them.

Thematic circular route with numerous information boards on the history of iron ore mining in the municipality of Mücke.
For almost a hundred years, the landscape in the lower Vogelsberg was characterized by large opencast iron ore mines. In addition to agriculture and forestry, mining was one of the most important sources of income for the population until the late …

Today we hiked the last of the three ore paths in "best April weather" (sun - hail - snow - sun).

Today we walked the second part of the Erzweg. This hike was also very beautiful. Except for 2/3 points where there could have been better signage.
