This route was planned by komoot.
The starting point of this loop is conveniently located next to a parking lot at the Wesertalsperre. This makes it easy to begin your ride.
This challenging route is estimated to take around 6 hours and 37 minutes to complete. However, given its demanding nature and potential need to push your bike on some sections, allow for extra time, especially if you plan to stop at viewpoints.
The terrain is varied and demanding. You'll encounter approximately 38.9 km of asphalt, 25.9 km of unpaved sections, and 16.0 km of compacted gravel. Smaller portions include paved roads, singletrack, and cycleways. Be aware that some sections can be very steep, with gradients up to 27%, and roads may become muddy during wet periods. There's also a unique crossing of the Rur river over wooden planking.
No, this route is classified as a 'Hard gravel ride' and is not suitable for beginners. It demands 'very good fitness' and advanced riding skills. Riders should be prepared for challenging uphill climbs and technical sections where pushing your bike might be necessary.
The best times are generally during drier periods to avoid muddy conditions. Be cautious during heavy rain or winter thaws, as the Rur river crossing over wooden planking can become flooded. Spring and autumn often offer pleasant temperatures and beautiful scenery, but always check local weather conditions before you go.
Generally, there are no specific permits or entrance fees required for cycling on designated trails within the High Fens-Eifel Nature Park. However, as it is a nature reserve, always respect local regulations, stay on marked paths, and protect the unique flora and fauna.
While the High Fens-Eifel Nature Park generally allows dogs, they must be kept on a leash at all times to protect wildlife and ensure the safety of other trail users. Given the demanding nature of this specific gravel biking route, consider if it's appropriate for your dog's fitness level.
The loop offers breathtaking views, including panoramic vistas of the unique High Fens plateau. You'll also get a View of Lake Eupen and pass by several reservoirs like the Weser, Lac de Gileppe, and Oleftalsperre. Don't miss the Gravel path with a panoramic view of the Hautes Fagnes and the View of the High Fens Plateau.
Yes, this route incorporates sections of several other trails. You'll find yourself on parts of the Geopfad, GR 56 Variante Sentier des Fagnes, GRP 573 Tour de la vallée de la Vesdre et des Hautes Fagnes, and Rund um den See, among others.
The route passes through extensive forests, meaning supply points can be infrequent. It is highly recommended to carry enough food and drinks for the entire duration of your ride.
Given the difficulty and length, you should bring plenty of water and snacks, a repair kit for your bike, appropriate gear for varied weather conditions, and a fully charged phone with the route downloaded. A good level of fitness and advanced riding skills are also essential.
Beautiful training ride from the Dirty Boar guys starting at the Wesertalsperre. First you ride towards Lac de la Gileppe as a small warm-up for what's to come: the climb to the Signal de Botrange. You ride through the most beautiful forests and endless gravel paths. Once you're passed the Signal de Botrance, you're rewarded with some long descents returning to the Wesertalsperre.
The route is (amended) GPX from the website of Dirty Boar, (the ladies ride), the route didn't disappoint at all, but that isn't that hard in this area. " Natuurpark Hoge Venen - Eifel", what a beauty! Just after the start, we had to turn around, because of a closing of this area (20-9-'22 till 10-10-22) for the burling deers. After that delay, the fun started! Gravel paths, alternated with (Belgian) asphalt ways, and a couple of single tracks. A region, we would definitely come back!
