Huis Doorn

Highlight • Castle

The abdicated German Emperor Wilhelm II spent his exile in the small castle "Haus Doorn" from 1920 and was buried there in 1941 in the neighboring mausoleum. We can warmly recommend the German-speaking tour through the small castle to everyone - it was a very humorous journey back in time!

Most beautiful cycle path of the Heuvelrug. The Let de Stigterpad consists mainly of shell path segments without holes or roots that beautifully through the changing landscape of the Utrechtse Heuvelrug. The complete Let de Stigterpad loops from Driebergen to Rhenen and is about 39 km long. On a not too busy day it is fantastic on the race or gravel bike.

Bornia Sand Drift

Highlight • Natural Monument

On the Bornia estate, the sand drift offers a beautiful insight into how the landscape evolves with the presence of people. In the Middle Ages, logging and overgrazing by sheep caused significant changes on the Utrechtse Heuvelrug. The forest area gradually transformed into an open area with heathlands and sand drifts.

Towards the end of the nineteenth century, the sheep herds disappeared and coniferous forests were planted on a large scale for timber production, causing the Heuvelrug to become forested again. The heathlands and sand drifts have been preserved on Heidestein and Bornia. The sheep are also back to keep the heathland open.

Trail Reviews

Beethove
May 15, 2022, Rondje Utrechtse Heuvelrug

The National Park Utrechtse Heuvelrug is located next to the city of Utrecht. With a fifteen minute bike ride you leave the hectic pace of the city behind you to indulge in nature, cultural heritage and a rich history. Cycle past stylish castles and country estates with their beautifully landscaped gardens and parks, through dense forests and beautiful dune and heathland areas. A surprising and original route to get acquainted with the diversity of the Heuvelrug. Get off your bike and take a walk on the winding paths of the Heidetuin. There are so many types of heather here that there is always something in bloom. A little further on you can relax at the Landgoed Kraaybeekerhof and if you cycle a little further you can admire the Buitenplaats Sparrendaal. Then you cycle a bit through Driebergen-Rijsenburg to the historic vegetable garden Bartiméus. This vegetable garden belongs to the care institution Bartiméus and you will find a rose garden, greenhouses and a tea house here. A real must to visit during your trip. Then you cycle further to Doorn-Leersum and Amerongen, where you can visit Museum Huis Doorn, Landgoed Zuylestein, Parc Broekhuizen and Amerongen Castle. https://www.routesinutrecht.nl/fietsroutes/4104129208/go-east-go-explore-the-great-outdoors
