Kniebis show coal pile (currently dismantled)

Highlight • Other

In the coal piles, wood used to be carbonized to charcoal with little air supply. The calorific value is increased by this process. Coal used to be used in the Black Forest for forging, glass and iron production.

Kniebis Moor Bath

Highlight • Lake

A swimming pool made of red sandstone blocks. A moor meadow drains into this basin. If you have overcome yourself to climb into this black water, then it's a great bathing feeling. Definitely worth it. Good for the joints and the skin.

January 12, 2024, Kniebiser Heimatpfad – Ein wahrer Genießerpfad :-)

Wonderful winter sunny weather – so get on your knees! Snow wasn't an issue because it wasn't there at all - except for the cross-country ski trail at the cross-country skiing stadium, which was artificially prepared with ice snow... Today the Kniebiser Heimatpfad was on the agenda, a hiking trail that has been maintained on a voluntary basis by a group of fit Kniebiser pensioners as the MET (Mobile Mission Team) since 2003. And there is actually so much to discover, read and marvel at along the way! On the Räuberwegle you go to the Ellbachseeblick with a wide view over this karst lake, which dates back to the last Ice Age. We then pass a colorful lucky tree and reach the center of Kniebis. In the ruins of the former Kniebis monastery you can learn the history of the monastery clearly on various panels. The chapel on the Kniebis, built on a pass road over the Black Forest, had probably served as a stop for travelers for a long time before it was first mentioned in a document in 1267. The later monastery church was looted over the years and fell into disrepair. Finally, in 1799, the church was completely destroyed by flames when a French (!!!!) troop roasted meat on an open fire... And very important - always point out the sharp distinction between BADISCH (symbadic) and SWÄBISCH (sin just Schwobe….)! We then continue to a former ski jump on the Abendwiese with a reference to the hill record from Epting Emil with a remarkable 18 meter jump distance!! Shortly after the beautifully designed Peace Tree and the new, large Abendwieshütte, we reach the border path of the old Baden-Württemberg state border with its mighty border stones and the artfully carved coats of arms of Württemberg and Baden. Finally, the Kniebis local association dedicated a showcase to its MET (Mobile Operations Team) where the heroes of the work can be admired in photos. Have fun hiking!

Beautiful walk, easy-to-walk paths that are not demanding, few altitude meters, beautifully developed, many information boards and viewpoints. Especially the old border path is beautiful with the old border stones and information boards.

And because it was so nice, another tour today. Two highlights, the viewing platform and the super great gas station. There I was spoiled with a delicious ciabatta and coffee by very friendly staff.

Thanks Karola... A nice tour, even for bad weather days

Two strange birds greet us and wish us a nice tour. Our home trail tour starts with a 15% chance of rain for the next two hours. We are equipped accordingly. Now the 15% is 100% and quite strong. We are lucky and sneak into the Kniebishütte. We treat ourselves to a little lunch and write physically tangible funny text messages from this wonderful area while it's pouring down outside. Then it clears up. We continue with a little drizzle. The top highlight is the Ellbachsee platform right at the start. The hiking trails are extremely well maintained, so easy to do for children and anyone with little surefootedness (and stamina). One section, 800 m long and parallel, is offered as a small root path. Today the rain must have coated the roots with soft soap. Since we had lost two hours at the beginning, we didn't bother looking at the information boards. We then picked these at home with a cup of long-stewed Nilgiri (which is then very fine). It was really very nicely done, by the way. In the last third the sun came out brightly and to our delight we were able to fill a small bag with porcini mushrooms. We reached our starting point, the Wellness Hotel Waldblick (daytime meal from the buffet from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.) and were a little confused. When we arrived at 3 p.m. the leftovers from the buffet did not appeal to us, so we decided to eat at the Speckwirt in Freudenstadt instead. Good decision. The monastery malt liqueur gets a recommendation. We downloaded the Parkster app for parking in Freudenstadt, so we were able to extend the parking time without any problems.
