Hiking

Immerse yourself in the Middle Ages: Two castle ruins, the Löwenburg and the Philippsburg, stand high above the historic half-timbered town of Monreal. In between, you hike on this dream path through quiet valleys and over wonderful hills. You start directly in dreamy Monreal on the banks of the Elzbach. This shows you the direction for the first few kilometers and leads you into a fragrant forest.

Then the path winds up to the slopes of the Juckelsberg, where you can enjoy enchanting views over the Eifel. From the Thürelzblick you zigzag down into the valley of the same. You hike a bit along the stream in a relaxed manner and then conquer another hill with great views. Towards the end of your circular hike, the Monreal castles await you. Both complexes offer you wide views, the Löwenburg even from its keep. Finally, you go back down to Monreal.

Philippsburg Castle Ruins

Highlight • Castle

The Philippsburg was built before the Löwenburg and was not as big as the Löwenburg. It was built by Count Philipp zu Virneburg. The keep can be viewed from the inside, but cannot be climbed.

Beautiful dream path We saved the highlight for last, which I personally think is better, exploring the castles towards the end You don't need to say much about the paths on the dream paths, everything is great, there's something from everyone.👍☀️

The year 2025 got off to a very good start: After a good night's stay with a delicious breakfast in the Tappes Hofgarten guesthouse near Sinzig... https://www.tappes-hofgarten.de ... we set off in Monreal for this very well signposted circular hike. The place looks a bit like a mini-Monschau with historic half-timbered houses, a small river running through it and two castle ruins towering on the hills above. At New Year's, of course, everything was still pretty deserted, but in summer it is definitely very beautiful and lively here. This is the very varied circular route with all the information: https://www.traumpfade.info/pfad/traumpfad/monrealer-ritterschlag/ You can copy it directly here: https://www.komoot.com/de-de/tour/1984628459 The elevation profile is a bit reminiscent of a fitness trail: It goes up and down again and again, and at the end there is another steep extra hill up to the two castle ruins. Many thanks to @Malina for this great hiking suggestion! :) John Lennon summed up beautifully and unforgettable what I hope for from the new year back in 1971: https://youtu.be/VOgFZfRVaww?si=8cMPLtogOlUfp_rs

Monrealer Ritterschlag is a beautiful tour. The view of the castles is wonderful. There was a sign on the path saying: closed! We walked anyway and wanted to see what the problem was. Maybe look for an alternative route. But there were no problems.

With initially low temperatures, we started a nice hike through the sunny autumn forest around Monreal with 17 people. Many thanks to the Eifelverein Daun for letting me go with them. It was a great pleasure for me in the nice group.

Out of the rain and into the Eifel. A journey that was more than worth it. An incredibly beautiful round with adventurous mountain paths, great ridge paths, the Löwenburg and the Philippsburg ruins.

Another great tour. Quite strenuous, but Monreal is simply a dream and the entire dream path rightly bears its name.

This time our hiking day led Svenja and me on two dream paths. It all started with the Monreal accolade. The town that gives it its name is worth a visit in itself! The half-timbered idyll here is widely known and rightly it is one of the most beautiful cities in the Eifel! And the dream path also keeps what its name promises - a really great, varied path! Hikers can enjoy great views, beautiful flora and fauna, a high proportion of trails and Phillips and Löwenburg castles here! And at the end there was a delicious tarte flambée 😋 Absolutely recommendable!
