This day Tour through the Piestingtal is ideal for leisure cyclists and families if you’re only going as far as Gutenstein. If you’re keen for a more challenging ride, or have an e-bike, you’ll have the option of continuing to Rohr im Gebirge.
The route starts at the junction with EuroVelo9 near Sollenau and its train station. You’ll broadly shadow the Piesting river as you cycle uphill through the valley. Several villages provide the opportunity to take a break or stop for a bite to eat. The further you journey, the steeper and narrower the Piestingtal becomes.
At Pernitz, you can make a worthwhile detour to Myra Falls. The Piestingtal is also known as the ‘Biedermeier valley’ and its beauty has inspired poets, musicians and painters including Ferdinand Raimund, Johannes Brahms, Friedrich Gauermann and Leopold Kupelwieser, all of whom plied their trade here. We recommend a visit to the Forest Farmers' Museum in Gutenstein, where the more relaxed part of the Piestingtal Cycle Path ends.
