Nestled between the Main and Tauber rivers lies the Ochsenfurt Gau, an idyllic and fertile region. The Gaubahn railway once connected the Tauber and Main valleys – this leisurely bike tour follows much of the former railway line.

Stage 1 begins in Ochsenfurt at the old town ferry. Follow the signs for the Gaubahn Cycle Path, passing the Carthusian monastery of Tückelhausen and continuing through Aub to Bieberehren on the Tauber River. In the town center, you'll join the Tauber Valley Cycle Path and soon after, near Röttingen, you'll see the first vineyards of the Tauber Valley. Passing through the picturesque town of Weikersheim with its baroque castle, the route continues close to the Tauber River to the wine village of Markelsheim, which boasts a nearly 1000-year history of winemaking.

If you've developed a taste for it, you can continue your journey by bike from Markelsheim to Wertheim am Main. komoot.de/tour/190086056

The Gaubahn once connected the Taubertal with the Maintal. Today there is a beautiful bike path on the former railway line. Simply wonderful for cycling.

Great city with lots of charm. There are sundials on every corner, a Kneipp facility by the cemetery and delicious food right on the market square. 😊👍

Weikersheim Castle

Highlight • Castle

You will find a pearl of the Renaissance in small Weikersheim: Weikersheim Castle with its magnificent park is a wonderful intermediate destination on a hike. The fact that the castle can be preserved so well is mainly due to the fact that it was bought by the state of Baden-Württemberg in 1967 and a lot of funds have been made available since then.

You can find the opening times and further information about the castle here: schloss-weikersheim.de/besuchsinformation/oeffnungszeiten.
