What. An. Adventure. When it comes to the Pyhän jyssäys Trail, we have two options in winter: We can either hike it with snowshoes or explore it on a fat bike. After yesterday's (unexpectedly, mind you) completely thrilled mountain biking in winter, I didn't have to think twice. The fat bike trail is also fully signposted here. However, I quickly realize that it requires a bit more stamina and balance than the beginner's trail I explored yesterday. It doesn't take long before I'm pushing my bike for the first time. It also doesn't take long before my tires slip off the narrow trail and I simply fall over. No problem when you land in 80 centimeters of powder snow. I can laugh at myself. I still have fun every single meter. I climb the wooded rocky hill of Pyhävaara on my fat bike. It's always worth looking back, as the panorama over the vast landscape is breathtaking. The highest point is the small Pyhävaaran kota shelter. A break here is also worthwhile – there's even a fire pit and a dry toilet. Views of Ruka included. From here on, it's downhill for me. Only geographically, mind you, because although the trail is more difficult to ride than my first fat bike ride, I'm having no less fun. PS: I rented my fat bike from Sport House Ruka (https://www.rukalla.fi/). The staff are not only incredibly helpful when it comes to equipment, but also helpful with any further questions, such as about the current condition of the trails.
