This challenging round tour usually takes about 7 to 7.5 hours to complete. It covers a distance of approximately 18.2 to 18.4 kilometers with over 1,000 meters of elevation gain and descent.
This hike is consistently rated as difficult, requiring a very good level of fitness, sure-footedness, and some alpine experience. It is not suitable for beginners. Hikers should be prepared for strenuous sections and exposed areas.
The terrain is varied and demanding. It begins with a shaded, gentle ascent through high forest, becoming steeper and more strenuous as you enter a mountain pine zone. This section may involve small rock steps. The route combines forest roads, gravel paths, and narrower hiking trails or 'steigs.' Sure-footedness is essential, especially in exposed sections.
The tour offers spectacular views throughout. As you ascend, you'll see the Guffert, Kaisergebirge, and the Rofan mountains. Closer to the summit, the vista expands to include the Karwendel mountain range and the stunning turquoise-blue Lake Achensee. The ultimate reward is the 360-degree panoramic view from the Vorderunnütz Summit, which on clear days can extend to the Großvenediger and Olperer. You can also find refreshment at the Schönjochalm.
Parking is available in Steinberg am Rofan, which serves as the starting point for this round tour. It's advisable to arrive early, especially during peak season, to secure a spot.
The autumn months are particularly recommended for hiking this trail. During this time, you can expect clear long-distance views and vibrant fall colors. While possible in summer, the Schönjochalm is typically only open then, and weather can be more variable.
Generally, dogs are allowed on hiking trails in the Rofan Mountains. However, given the difficult nature of this specific trail, including exposed sections and potentially challenging terrain, ensure your dog is fit and accustomed to such conditions. Always keep dogs on a leash, especially in areas with livestock or wildlife.
No specific hiking permits or entrance fees are generally required for accessing the trails in the Rofan Mountains, including this route. However, always respect local regulations and private property signage.
Yes, sections of this route coincide with other established trails. You will find parts of the
Bike Trail Tirol Etappe 08: Achensee - Kaiserhaus
,Rund um den Unnutz
, andAV Weg 412
along the way. It also briefly touches on theSchmalzklausen Runde
andWanderweg Unnutze
.Given the trail's difficulty and varied terrain, you should bring sturdy, ankle-high hiking boots, weather-appropriate clothing (layers are recommended), and telescopic hiking poles for stability. Adequate food and drink are essential, as the Schönjochalm is the only refreshment stop and is not always open.
The most strenuous part of the ascent is through the mountain pine zone. A good strategy is to pace yourself, take regular short breaks, and utilize hiking poles for support. If hiking during the summer months, plan your timing to coincide with the opening hours of the Schönjochalm, which offers a welcome break after this challenging section.
We started at the free parking lot on the outskirts of Steinberg. First, a beautiful forest path, then a steady climb through mountain pines. At the summit, we enjoyed a snack with a wonderful view of the surrounding mountains and Lake Achensee. The descent initially continued through mountain pines, later on a forest path to the Schönjochalm. We stopped for a quick snack with cake and a cold drink. We followed the forest path back to the car. Unfortunately, we missed the turnoff to the forest path and realized this too late, so we were left with the rather boring forest road. Overall, a nice tour with few people.
Beautiful hike to Vorderunnutz. The trail from Steinberg is truly beautiful, first on secluded paths through the forest. Then it turns into a mountain trail through mountain pines with fantastic views of the Guffert, the Rofan Mountains, and many mountains to the east. At the top, the path leads to open terrain with chamois sightings on Vorderunnutz. The descent towards Köglalm and Schönjochalm also passes through mountain pines, but always with a panoramic view of Lake Achensee. A short stretch on the forest road to the Schönjochalm for a refreshment stop, and shortly afterward, the transition to the Gfasskopf trail. I actually wanted to climb the Schlagkopf, which I saw on the same tour 7 years ago, but couldn't find a path through the mountain pines. Perhaps in winter with snowshoes when there's enough snow.
