Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best time of year to hike the Alpenblumenweg Oberseite?

The trail is typically open and best enjoyed from mid-June to September. During this period, you'll experience the vibrant display of alpine flowers that give the trail its name, and the weather conditions are generally most favorable for hiking in the high mountains.

Where can I park to access the trail?

The starting point for the Alpenblumenweg Oberseite is the Trogach car park. From there, an initial segment involves traversing a forest road to reach Gasser Kofel before transitioning to the main hiking path.

Is this trail suitable for dogs?

While the Hohe Tauern National Park generally welcomes dogs, it's crucial to keep them on a leash to protect the delicate alpine flora and fauna, especially since this is a themed alpine flower trail. Always ensure your dog is well-behaved and can handle the challenging terrain.

Do I need a permit or is there an entrance fee for the Hohe Tauern National Park?

Generally, there are no specific entrance fees or permits required for hiking on designated trails within the Hohe Tauern National Park, including the Alpenblumenweg Oberseite. However, always respect local regulations, stay on marked paths, and protect the natural environment.

What kind of terrain can I expect on the route?

The terrain varies, starting with a forest road from the Trogach car park. It then transitions to a moderately ascending hiking trail, moving through sparse forests before reaching the treeline. You'll encounter well-trodden paths, and some sections may include wooden steps and switchbacks, leading to expansive alpine lawns and valley views.

What are the main attractions or viewpoints along the way?

The primary attraction is the rich alpine flora, offering a colourful diversity of alpine plants, especially in the alpine meadows. You'll also find scenic viewpoints, such as the View of Defereggental from Hohe Tauern National Park Trail, providing panoramic vistas of the valley. The Reggen-Alm is also a notable hut along the longer route.

Are there different route options for this trail?

Yes, there are two main circular route options. The longer option, which is approximately 14.2 km with around 867 meters of elevation gain, takes about 6 hours. There is also a shorter circular route, typically around 6-6.4 km with 639-800 meters of elevation gain, taking 3.5 to 4 hours.

What makes this trail unique compared to other hikes in the region?

This trail is specifically designed as an "Alpine Flower Trail" (Alpenblumenweg), offering an educational and aesthetic journey through the alpine ecosystem. It provides excellent insights into the living conditions of high-mountain plants and their habitats, with a focus on the vibrant alpine flora.

Does the trail intersect with other well-known paths?

Yes, the route also passes through sections of the Alpenblumenweg (langer Rundweg), 2-Täler-Trail, and Blumenweg. You may also encounter parts of the Gasser Kofel and Reggnweg trails.

What should I pack for this hike?

Given its classification as a difficult red mountain trail, you should pack appropriate hiking gear. This includes sturdy hiking boots, weather-appropriate clothing (layers are recommended due to changing mountain conditions), sufficient water and snacks, sun protection, and a map or GPS device. A Natural History Guide, if available, can enhance your experience of the alpine flora.

Is there an insider tip for hiking this trail?

To fully appreciate the educational aspect of the trail, consider looking for the Natural History Guide published by the Austrian Alpine Association. It offers interesting facts about the flora and fauna, including the healing properties of some alpine plants, at various stops along the route, enriching your understanding of this unique alpine environment.

July 26, 2023, Defereggental | Tag 2 Alpenblumenweg - Reggnalm - Seespitzhütte

The alpine flower trail is highly recommended. However, you need a good basic condition here. But you will be more than rewarded for the effort with a great panorama. We started at the Trojer Almtal hiking car park.
