Running
Route 040 is a unique challenge that takes you from the ocean shore to the top of Mount Teide, the highest peak in Spain, at almost 4,000 metres above sea level. It is the route with the greatest gradient in the entire country and one of the most demanding in Europe. If you are a fan of trail running and challenges, this route is for you.
Keep in mind that you will not find any water refill points for most of the climb, so it is essential to calculate your calorie expenditure well and bring enough food to complete the adventure. You can plan water refill points in shelters, but also bring a thermal blanket, a mobile phone with a battery and an external battery, energy supplements, sun protection and a good headlamp.
The adventure begins at El Socorro beach and follows the PR-TF 41 trail through impressive landscapes. After crossing the slopes of Los Campeches, Tigaiga and Ruiz, you face a steep slope that takes you to the La Corona viewpoint and then to the Asomadero viewpoint. You enter the Corona Forestal natural park, where vegetation gives way to the aridity of the Teide national park.
From Montaña del Cabezón, you can choose the PR-TF 41.1 variant to Portillo Alto, or follow the zigzag to La Rambleta at 3,555 metres. For the last 630 metres to the summit, you will need an advance permit. This route requires great physical and mental endurance, but the view from the top is unrivalled.
