As with almost all Swedish national parks, a high-quality documentation. The highlight is the hand-operated sound generator. Children will love it.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it typically take to hike Svärmorsleden?

The Svärmorsleden trail is approximately 12.5 kilometers long. While komoot estimates it takes around 3 hours and 35 minutes, many hikers find it can take anywhere from 3 hours 36 minutes to 8 hours to complete, depending on pace and conditions. The varied and sometimes challenging terrain means you should allow ample time.

What is the terrain like on this trail?

The terrain on Svärmorsleden is quite varied and can be demanding. You'll encounter sections with exposed roots and rocks, and while some initial parts might have boardwalks, the path often transitions into a worn-out track. Expect rough uphill sections, rocky areas with giant boulders, and even some swampy ground. Sure-footedness is definitely an advantage here.

Is Svärmorsleden suitable for beginners or families?

Svärmorsleden is generally rated as moderate to hard. Its challenging terrain with roots, rocks, and uphill sections means it requires a good level of physical fitness and sure-footedness. It might be too demanding for young children or those new to hiking. For families or beginners, other trails in Björnlandet National Park might be more suitable.

What are the main natural features or viewpoints along the route?

The trail is renowned for its ancient, untouched primeval forest, featuring pine trees over 180 years old, and some even dating back to the Viking era. You'll also see visible traces of past forest fires, like charred stumps. A notable viewpoint is the View of Lake Angsjö from Björnberget. You might also pass by the Hiking Cabin and Rest Area in Björnlandets Nationalpark.

Does the trail intersect with other paths in Björnlandet National Park?

Yes, while Svärmorsleden makes up 100% of this specific route, it does intersect with other trails within the park. You'll find sections that overlap with the Guldbäcksleden (about 32% of this route) and the Angsjöleden (about 19% of this route), offering opportunities to explore further if you wish.

What is the best time of year to hike Svärmorsleden?

The best time to hike Svärmorsleden is typically during the late spring, summer, and early autumn months when the weather is milder and the trails are free of snow and ice. Summer offers long daylight hours, while early autumn brings beautiful fall colors. Winter hiking is possible but requires specialized gear and experience due to snow and potentially harsh conditions.

Where can I park for the Svärmorsleden trail?

Parking for Svärmorsleden is available at the main entrance to Björnlandet National Park. The trail officially starts near the Visitor Information Point, Björnlandet National Park, where you'll find designated parking areas. Public transport options to the park are limited, so driving is generally the most convenient way to access the trailhead.

Are dogs allowed on Svärmorsleden?

Yes, dogs are generally allowed in Björnlandet National Park, including on Svärmorsleden. However, they must be kept on a leash at all times to protect wildlife and ensure a pleasant experience for all visitors. Always remember to clean up after your pet.

Do I need a permit or is there an entrance fee for Björnlandet National Park?

No, there is no entrance fee to visit Björnlandet National Park, and you do not need a permit for day hiking on Svärmorsleden. However, it's always a good idea to check the official website for Sveriges Nationalparker (sverigesnationalparker.se) for any updated regulations or specific rules regarding overnight stays or other activities within the park.

Is there any accommodation or shelter available along the trail?

Yes, a unique feature along the trail is the Svärmorskojan (Mother-in-law's Cabin), a wilderness hut located by Svärmorstjärn. This cabin offers free, basic overnight accommodation on a first-come, first-served basis, with amenities like sleeping places, a stove, table, and chairs. It's a rustic option for those looking to extend their hike or experience a night in the wilderness.

What should I pack for a hike on Svärmorsleden?

Given the trail's moderate to hard difficulty and varied terrain, you should pack sturdy hiking boots with good ankle support, plenty of water, snacks, and appropriate layers of clothing for changing weather. A map and compass or GPS device are recommended, as well as insect repellent during warmer months. Don't forget a first-aid kit and a headlamp if you plan to hike late.

Trail Reviews

August 12, 2022, Björnlandet Nationalpark 🥾 Svärmorsleden Trail

Fitos of course mixed up again. Early in the morning cycled the 16 km to Björnlandet NP. What was uphill yesterday was easy to ride downhill and flat today - except for the 3 km in front of the park. Then it went up again. It's a varied hike - over roots, stones 🪨 or nice and soft forest floor. Birds (tits too), woodpecker, capercaillie fluttering startled by it - also hazel grouse, 🐿 and many 🐜 It's great to climb up the rock and enjoy the view there. The lake at the park entrance is of course also great. There is parking on the way. At the entrance itself ne turning possibility and some car parking spaces. This is probably your area @Faulenzer and I took you mentally with me on this day! You too, of course, Uwe, Sabine and Kiwi @Rusty (Uwe + Sabine). - even if there were no cloudberries. @Roland 🚴🏿🇨🇭🦮frischluftsüchtig. Well, you are my faithful companion and adviser anyway! Thanks very much!!

Sometimes climbing over rocks, sometimes almost sinking into the swamp. Collect berries in between. You have to be pretty tough for this tour!

After the foretaste round yesterday, the big round in the NP "Björnlandet" follows today. It is the longest round in the NP. With combinations you always run parts of the route twice. That's why we didn't extend it. 😁 To be honest, you don't have to extend it. You just go slower. The path is not difficult here, but it does require constant attention. Afterwards it feels like over 20 km. Enjoyment factor, very high! 🤩👌 This NP is one of the very recommendable. It is unlikely what you will get here again: 2 fine overnight huts, with beds and mattresses, kitchen, dishes, firewood, etc. and, you guessed it, ..... ALL FOR FREE! 🤷‍♂️🥰👍 It is expressly allowed to camp, make a fire and pick berries and mushrooms. The park is well prepared, firewood everywhere, drinking water sources, everything clean, no rubbish and what an ingenious landscape. And blackberries, the finest berry of all. There are only wild berries. Cloudberries are not yet cultivated anywhere in the world. They taste wonderful and you could harvest buckets here. 🥰😋 Our rest was also very entertaining and delicious. We could have cooked in the beautiful hut, but in this weather? What can I say, such a beautiful day, such a great hike and actually only met 1 pair of hikers. They were also Germans, as we only found out at the parking lot. There are 3 motorhomes and a handful of cars at the parking lot. We have high season and today is Sunday. 🤔 I could tell so much about Sweden, the country, the people, the culture, the netiquette. .... But I always rave about it! 🥰🥰🥰 Just 1 little thing as an example. We haven't heard a car horn in 5 weeks. Nobody rushes here. 👍 🙋‍♂️🙋‍♀️🐕

At 10 am we leave for the green walk, Svärmorsleden in bear country because that is the translation of Björnlandet. A tough one of 12 km, it takes you 6 to 8 hours, says the information board, so that says enough I think. It is indeed one with climbing and scrambling, over the many trees that have fallen, over the 🪨 and stones and in between. The path winds constantly... sometimes through a peat area, then up between rocks, then down again... very different and it requires concentrated walking. The green and orange walk go together for the first km, even after the first rest stop where we have a beautiful view of the surroundings. The green then goes deeper into the forest while the orange one returns. Eventually I meet 1 family on the green walk with two fairly young children of about 9-10 years old. I don't see many people doing that at that age. Hats off! Because I have to be honest, I have sweated a lot 😥 or sloth sweat is quickly ready… that is also possible 😄! We use the places at the hut to eat our picnic and also to have a look inside. Timo already feels like making his bed there… we will do that next year Timo. The day flew by but my ankles are very happy that they will soon get a nice shower and can rest.

After we made a small evening tour after arriving at the national park yesterday, we went for the big tour today. The impressions of this old pine forest are always different and cannot be described. You can see old injuries from fires, the smell is unique. Lots of cloudberries 😊

In the late afternoon I go on an extensive tour through the "Urskogen" in Björnlandets National Park. I am completely alone for 15 kilometers in this pristine nature. It is only at the Angsjökojan shelter that I meet some Swedes who are staying here with their children. One father said: "... it's going to be exciting 😆"
