Hiking

On this hike, you follow in the footsteps of the former lords, knights and farmers and discover three castles, three legends and three spectacular viewpoints.

It starts in Yvoir. Opposite the train station, you can get a refreshing drink before you start or stock up on provisions in the village square. Then you set off to explore the ruins of Poilvache Castle.

It continues to one of the most impressive ruins in Belgium: Château Fort de Montaigle. From the defensive wall and the remains of the towers, you have a great view of the Flavion valley and the surrounding landscape.

You then pass through the medieval town of Bouvignes, which is at least as charming as Dinant, the destination of your hike. On the banks of the Meuse, you can marvel at the spectacular backdrop of water, rock and collegiate church before walking to the train station.

Tip: You can find accommodation along the route in Dinant, Anhée, Falaen, Weillen and Sommière.

Ruins of Poilvache Castle

Highlight • Castle

The Poilvache castle ruins is a ruined medieval fortress located in Yvoir, Wallonia, Belgium1. The castle was built before 1228 and was originally known as “chastiau d’émeraude” (emerald castle) because of the deep green forests that surrounded it1. The fortress certainly existed in 1228 and developed into a political and military centre. The ruins are of archaeological interest and are protected as Exceptional Heritage of the Walloon Region1. According to legend, the hilltop castle dates back to the time of Charlemagne. It is said to have been built in the early 9th century by the Four Sons of Aymon, who had fortified themselves on an impregnable rock to escape the wrath of Charlemagne.
