The full loop is approximately 8.5 to 10 km (5.3 to 6.2 miles) long. While some sources suggest a quicker pace, a realistic estimate for the entire trail is around 3 hours, especially considering the varied and sometimes challenging terrain.
The trail offers a diverse landscape. You'll encounter 'troll forest,' old forests, and dramatic sections with high mountains dropping into Lake Ågelsjön. The northern side features more challenging terrain with significant climbs, descents, and loose stones. The western side, however, is generally flatter and follows a forest road. Be aware of sections with dead spruce trees.
The trail typically starts and ends at the Hultsbruk parking area, which is also referred to as the Ågelsjön Nature Reserve parking area. This is a convenient spot to begin your hike.
The loop offers magnificent wilderness scenery and numerous beautiful viewpoints overlooking Lake Ågelsjön. Notable spots include the dramatic Cliffs at Ågelsjön and the general View of Ågelsjön. You'll also pass by Skråpberget, known for its scenic vistas.
The trail's difficulty varies. While some sections are relatively flat, the northern side is considered 'demanding' due to steep ascents, descents, and loose rocks, making it challenging for beginners or very young children. However, near the bathing area, there's a paved, accessible path suitable for wheelchairs and strollers, including a children's story path ('Lillebrors sagostig'), offering an easier option for families.
Yes, the trail is well-equipped. You'll find many resting places with barbecue facilities along the route. For those interested in staying overnight, there's a wind shelter at Tallholmen and designated camping spots. The reserve also has swimming opportunities, including an accessible ramp at the bathing area.
There is no general entrance fee or permit required for hiking in the Ågelsjön Nature Reserve. However, if you plan to fish in Lake Ågelsjön, you will need a valid fishing license.
As the trail is located within a nature reserve, dogs are generally welcome but must be kept on a leash at all times to protect wildlife and ensure a pleasant experience for all visitors. Please remember to clean up after your pet.
The trail can be enjoyed during most seasons. Spring and autumn offer beautiful colors and cooler temperatures, ideal for hiking. Summer is great for combining hiking with swimming in Lake Ågelsjön. Winter hiking is possible, but the more challenging northern sections with steep slopes and loose rocks can become very slippery and difficult with ice and snow, requiring appropriate gear and caution.
Yes, the route is part of the Östgötaleden: Ågelsjön runt trail, covering 100% of it. It also briefly intersects with sections of the Jursla milspår (11%) and Jurslabanan MTB (11%) trails.
While the primary access is by car to the Hultsbruk parking area, public transport options exist. You can look into services like Östgötatrafiken's 'närtrafik' (on-demand public transport) which may serve the Hultsbruk/Ågelsjön area. It's advisable to check their current schedules and routes in advance.
Today we went on a tour around Lake Agelsjön, which is located in a nature reserve. Pine trees dominate the sparse forest, blueberries and cranberries, ferns and heather give this forest a harmonious touch. It was pure relaxation to walk on mostly narrow paths and to enjoy great views of the lake again and again. The many basalt rocks are typical and provide plenty of variety. A group of young people clearly enjoyed jumping into the cool lake 😬. I really enjoyed this tour (especially since there haven't been any new mosquito bites today 😉). 🤓📷
