Extensive circular hike over 16 km, mainly through the forest with springs on the way. Highlights of the tour are the view from the Walburgis Chapel and the Siegfried Fountain. This hike for moderate difficulty leads past the Siegfried fountain. Hagen is said to have murdered the legendary hero Siegfried here. However, this could not be proven. Boards along the path through the forest, which is shrouded in legend and myth, provide information about the Nibelung. The Hildegeresbrunnen was already mentioned in 795 in the Lorsch Codex as a border point of the Mark Heppenheim. From the Walpurgis chapel on the way, the view extends across the Weschnitz valley to Lindenfels. Source: https://www.vorderer-odenwald.de/detail/id=5f1540f50e3c1c0fedd1595e We started the hike at the Wegscheide I car park and followed the G8 marking (green on a white background) to the Weschnitz forest cemetery. Then we are on the beautiful, but also strenuous zigzag path up to the Walburgis chapel. This was even open today and we were able to visit the beautiful interior. It continued over the Kahlberg down into the beautiful Gaßbachtal and on the artificial path to Grasellenbach. From there a strenuous but absolutely worthwhile ascent to the Siegfried fountain on the Speaartkopf (548m). Then it went on rather wide unspectacular forest paths in a big arc back to the parking lot. Conclusion: Beautiful hike, mainly in the forest and on the historical traces of the Nibelungen. The Nibelungen saga can be experienced here in a “hiking” way, because the fictitious story is projected onto real locations by means of a poetic trick, and so you can experience the saga chronologically on information boards on the “Nibelungenweg” geopark path, a section of the Nibelungensteig.
The tour corresponds to the circular hiking trail "G8" and runs for around 8 km from the Siegfriedbrunnen to the cemetery in Weschnitz on the Niebelungenpfad. The Niebelungenpfad is also still on my list and I hope it works out this year 😉
Great first tour in the Odenwald. Very varied round with great impressions and views.
I had actually planned a different tour, but since Loky was injured and the weather wasn't supposed to be great, we decided on the shorter route last night. Directly from the hotel, we headed back along the Kunstweg (Art Trail) and mostly along the Nibelungensteig. There were some beautiful highlights and great views. The trails were varied, and the weather was 🌬🌥 It only started to rain a little harder 🌧 from the Siegfriedbrunnen fountain onward.
As always, we were mostly alone on the trail. Many beautiful views. The section between Wegscheide and the wind turbines is unfortunately less idyllic. Firstly, the hiking trail runs very close to the main road for quite a while, and secondly, the trail has been completely destroyed by heavy machinery, making it difficult to follow. The trail through the Gassbachtal valley is again very idyllic and is nicely marked by the art trail. The trail markings were G8, and they are also very clearly visible throughout.
After we recently picked up the Bergstraße-Odenwald/Wandertouren brochure from the tourist office, of which we only had the old version, I realized that we were still missing a few of the 60 signposted, marked tours that can be found in it. So today we went to Grasellenbach, since the tour mainly promised forest and kept it. Official description: Extensive circular hike over 16 km, mainly through the forest with springs on the way. There are beautiful views of Grasellenbach from the edge of the forest. The Hildegeresbrunnen was already mentioned in 795 in the Lorsch Codex as a border point of the Mark Heppenheim. From the Walpurgis chapel on the way, the view extends across the Weschnitz valley to Lindenfels. https://www.bergstrasse-odenwald.de/detail/ We started the hike at the Wegscheide I car park and followed the G8 marking (green on a white background) to the Weschnitz forest cemetery. Then we are on the beautiful, but also strenuous zigzag path up to the Walburgis chapel - the last time we were there, we went down and felt sorry for the hikers who had to go up - today I had to feel sorry for myself 😅. The chapel was open today and we were able to visit the beautiful interior. It continued over the Kahlberg down into the beautiful Gaßbachtal and on the artificial path to Grassellenbach. From there, another really strenuous, but absolutely worthwhile ascent to the Siegfried fountain on the Spessartkopf (548m). Then it went on rather wide unspectacular forest paths in a big arc back to the parking lot. In the last third we also felt the most sun - overall I would estimate the tour at 80% forest - with the over 30 degrees today, the 20% open-air area was too much. I was happy when we came back to Emila's drinks stand 2 km before the end. Incidentally, we have already passed the Walpurgis Chapel on the F 3 hiking trail (Fürth/Grasellenbach). The G8 is a beautiful and varied circular route that is worth it 👍🌞. Chapel, springs and in Siegfried's footsteps 🐲 and all of this surrounded by great scenery and places to stop for refreshments. This tour will definitely be repeated 😉👍
