[Hiking on April 11th] From the Wissembourg train station, located just outside the city center, the Lauter River accompanies me into the old center of this tranquil Alsatian town. Medieval houses and the Church of St. Peter and Paul with a small Romanesque chapel bear witness to centuries past. From here, a circular hiking trail marked with a red circle leads north out of the town and through vineyards across the green border to Schweigen-Rechtenbach in the Palatinate region. The town with the somewhat cumbersome name is all about wine: In addition to wineries, wine bars, and wine vending machines, you'll also find the German Wine Gate, an unmistakable structure from the 1930s that marks the southern beginning of the German Wine Route. And you can even catch a glimpse of paradise, or so claims an inscription on a very inviting bench with a view of the Black Forest. On the way back, I cross the green border again, amidst the vineyards, this time traveling in the opposite direction from Germany to France. Shortly after the towers of St. Peter and St. Paul's reappear in the valley, I descend along forest paths to the banks of the Lauter River. Behind the old fulling mill, which now houses a restaurant, the small river divides at the edge of the old town. And on the final stretch, along the Lauter Canal and the city wall with its preserved city towers, one picturesque photo opportunity follows the next.
I really liked this route: at just under 10 km and with relatively little elevation gain, it's a great excursion that has everything: great views from the vineyards, a nice place to stop for a bite to eat in Wissembourg. A short but lovely hike. Easily doable in 2.5 hours!
Today the first hike from Wissembourg along beautiful half-timbered houses, along the Lauter and then the climb into the vineyards. Along the Château of St. Paul to Schweigen-Rechtenbach to the German Wine Gate. Here every winemaker had a wine bottle vending machine. Unfortunately most of the paths between the vineyards are asphalted.
Meanwhile, Christmas is getting closer and closer and everything is decorated and festive - beautiful. You can't escape the Christmas feeling anymore ☺️
Beautiful circular route with great views and great places to stop
Pure rain showers – beautiful Wissembourg, blessed by sunshine.
Today, Flex took me to Wissembourg without changing trains and pretty much on time. A beautiful little town with plenty of half-timbered houses and old buildings. The Lauter River adds a special charm. Combined with a short hike, it was a perfect day.
Today Oli, Lotta and I were traveling to France. Since none of us have been to Wissembourg yet, today was a wonderful opportunity. We spent a lot of time traveling through the vineyards and we also really liked the pretty little town. Rebert's treats are really great. I haven't eaten such delicious eclair in a long time. We stocked up on delicious wine and juice at the Oerther winery. There was also tarte flambée and shopping at the Supermarché. C'était un jour magnifique.
