Trail Reviews

Leonie
August 22, 2022, Warum sich der weite Weg zum Wolayer See lohnt 🥾 – Nassfeld-Lesachtal-Weissensee

We have an early start today. Where? To Lake Wolayer. We had heard a lot of good things about the lake and had seen some great tours on Komoot. After we have parked our car at the Hubertus chapel, we first follow a forest road. At first it started comfortably, but soon the ascent gets steeper and steeper. In some sections we have the choice of following the forest road or taking the steeper shortcuts. We opted for the steeper but shorter paths and march past some beautiful bridges and waterfalls here. After some time we came to a small level on which the upper Wolayeralm is located. From this beautiful corner, the path continues uphill in a serpentine manner to a last big climb, which can be shortened again. Completely sweaty, we then reach the Wolayerhütte, which is located directly on the beautiful, turquoise Wolayersee. It is a fantastic view and an incredible idyll that awaits us here. Despite a few other hikers, you can totally relax here and we enjoy a cozy snack with a view of the lake and the great panorama. After a long rest we make our way back. We take this along the forest path. When we get to the bottom of the car we are overjoyed, but at the same time dead tired. In summary, the hike to Wolayer See is a total highlight of the area and a place not to be missed. The Wolayerhütte also invites you to a small feast or a cool drink. Despite everything, you should plan enough time and buffer for a long break at the lake and be prepared for a not entirely unexhausting hike. {0} {1}

From the Hubertus Chapel, the route mostly leads through the picturesque Wolayer Valley. The path initially runs along a gravel road that winds through the alpine landscape. There are also sections that can be shortened using old paths or trails. The hike offers breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and runs over several alpine pastures. The climbs are sometimes quite challenging. When you reach the Wolayersee Hut, you are rewarded with a great view. The hut is surrounded by mountain peaks on the turquoise Woyalersee, magical. The hut is open for business. On the way back there was a bit of thundery rain. A very scenic Albin tour.

Even the approach to the Hubertus Chapel was an adventure. The small road eventually turned into a gravel path, and after rain, several streams probably flowed across the path. After the parking lot, the path continued uphill, sometimes steeply, sometimes gently, along the dirt road. We passed a large waterfall and the Upper Wolayer Alm (Upper Wolayer Alm). There were wonderful views again and again. Wolayersee is a stunningly beautiful place. We took a break at the hut and walked around the lake again before beginning the descent.

Quite a challenge for people from the flatlands of Tyrol like us. 9 km of steep uphill. But wonderful views and a snack in the Wolayer Hut strengthen our tired limbs.

Demanding hike in the heart of the Carnic Alps. Start at the Hubertus Chapel in the Wolayertal via the Obere Wolayeralm to the Wolayersee.

The journey from the already remote Lesach Valley to the even more distant Lower Wolayer Alm is a source of anticipation. Franzi, our junior in a backpack, and I set off on a cool morning from the parking lot of the Hubertus Chapel. Despite its remote location, the tour is popular. Numerous hikers set out in good spirits. The exercise, fresh air, and anticipation of the mountains are inspiring. First, we follow a forest road through a wide valley basin framed by towering rock faces. After a short while, we have the choice between a trail or a forest path. Naturally, we choose the more natural option. The path climbs rapidly, past the babbling Hildenfall waterfall. Blueberries and raspberries line the path, providing sweet energy in the middle of the forest. At the Upper Wolayer Alm, another valley basin opens up after the terraced terrain. The panorama includes Mahderkopf and Rauchkofel to the north, and Hohe Warte and Seekopf to the south. Horses, cows, and marmots enliven the scenery, like a kitschy postcard that has suddenly become reality. At times, the only path to walk here is the wide main path. But that's okay, because we can let our eyes wander and thus don't have to watch our steps too closely. A narrow, steep path eventually branches off again, and the climb continues steeply. We wind our way up through densely planted black alders that reach up to our faces – and then suddenly, Lake Wolayersee is there: Caribbean blue, magical, framed by the Hoher Warte and Seewarte. A place that instantly moves and fascinates. Word has spread: numerous hikers, even from the Italian side, come up to experience this natural gem. Up here, at almost 1,960 meters, the Geo-Trail and the traces of the First World War await. Fossil corals, sea lilies, and squid tell of millions of years of geological history, while trenches and rusted barbed wire bear witness to the tragedies of the past. These silent witnesses remind us to shape the present in the spirit of peace. The Wolayerseehütte welcomes us warmly with Kaiserschmarrn (sweet pancake) and a magnificent view of the lake – healing for body and soul. The hut offers a wealth of information about hikes, climbing areas, and, for us, inspiration for our next summits. Our return journey follows the same path, but the sun and light transform the landscape into a new experience. On the way home, we're already dreaming of returning. We'll then cycle to the hut and continue on foot to Rauchkofel and Hohe Warte, or perhaps even follow the Carnic High Trail in several stages.
