This route combines faith, nature and tradition, starting from the village of Pogerola, a jewel nestled on Mount Falconcello. The ancient name, Pigellula, recalls the pigelle: terracotta dishes used to bake bread, a detail that reveals something of the simplicity and authenticity of this place. To get here, we highly recommend public transport over driving: https://www.visitamalfi.info/en/getting-there/
The route is divided into two parts: the first winds its way uphill among steps immersed in greenery, to the 18th-century Church of the Madonna dei Fuondi, perched on a promontory with a breathtaking view. Here, a bas-relief of the Madonna and Child guards a legend – it’s said that the statue became so heavy on its way to Agerola that the bearers had to stop – a divine sign that the church was meant to be built here. Even today, on the third Sunday after Easter, it’s a pilgrimage site.
The second part guides you through the streets of the centre, visiting the Church of Santa Marina Vergine, the remains of the Castrum Pigellulae with its silent towers, and the charming Church of San Michele Arcangelo.
On the way back, treat yourself to a stop in the traditional restaurants of Pogerola, or descend to Amalfi along the scenic Via Nuova: https://www.komoot.com/tour/2240140483
