The enchanted Elfengrotte near Bad Bertrich is a popular destination, especially for young GesundLand visitors, because fabulous fairy tales come to life here before your inner eye. Immerse yourself for a moment in legendary stories and old legends when you visit the small grotto. The cave is located directly on the "HeimatSpur Elfengrotte walking path" of the same name, which at 2.4 km is also easy for children to master. Right next door, the Elbesbach waterfall plunges into the depths with a roar. This place owes its nickname "Cheese Grotto" to the shape of its stones, which are reminiscent of round cheese wheels. The grotto was created many thousands of years ago when red-hot basalt lava flowed from the high volcanoes into the Üssbach valley and created a unique landscape there. When it cooled, the basalt lava solidified into columns in which horizontal tension cracks developed. Weathering over the centuries has created the shape of stacked cheese wheels.
