Impressive rocky landscapes and picturesque villages nestled between rolling hills play a central role in this tour. Steinerberg, Hornberg, and Schrock offer sweeping views of the landscape surrounding Altenburg. The rugged rock formations and the legendary Devil's Hole are just a few of the highlights of a tour where you'll often stop to enjoy the view of these natural monuments.
Kreuzberg Castle, which you'll see in the final section of the route, is the only still inhabited castle in the Ahr Valley. The route skirts the structure, providing numerous opportunities for impressive photos.

Inspired by Veronika and Michael from WanderVerliebt, we set off today into the beautiful Ahr Valley. In bright sunshine and perfect hiking weather, we began our hike full of anticipation. However, shortly after setting off, construction work forced us to re-plan – so we headed back to the starting point and in the opposite direction. Unfortunately, there was no way we could continue there either, as another construction site on the railway tracks near Altenahr put a stop to our plans. But our hiking passion remained undiminished! We quickly decided to walk along the Ahr River, crossed the impressive steel bridge, and hiked back towards Teufelsloch. Along the way, we met two other hikers who were also facing the same challenges – best wishes to you both! From Teufelsloch, everything went as planned. We continued on our way towards Schrock and took a leisurely breakfast break in the sun. After about 20 minutes, we continued toward Steinberg, where we took a short break – nothing beats a cold wheat beer on a hike! From there, we continued hiking without further incident to Hornberg. There, we took the opportunity to take some nice souvenir photos before heading back to Altenahr, where our car was parked. It was an all-around successful hike through an area we were already familiar with, yet still fascinating. We highly recommend the route – despite a few small detours!
The start and finish was the paid parking lot (day ticket €5.00) near the Altenahr cemetery. A beautiful, yet truly challenging tour given today's temperatures. Past the Teufelsloch (Devil's Hole), high up to the Schrock with its beautiful view, and then along shady forest paths and trails to the Steinerberghaus. There, I took a long break, ate a piece of cake, and enjoyed a non-alcoholic wheat beer, before continuing toward Horneberg and Kreuzberg. The heat (35 degrees Celsius) was starting to get intense, especially since the sun was shining for a good stretch in Kreuzberg. I almost missed a turnoff and turned right between some houses through the Vischeltal valley. A path initially leads uphill, later there is an incline, and then I climb a few steps until I eventually reach the Jesus statue. From here, I follow a meadow path and a rocky path down to the Ahr River. A good bit further on, we cross a temporary bridge over the Ahr and then follow the road back to the car park.
The Gipfelweg (summit trail) is a challenging but beautiful circular hike in the Ahr Valley, leading over three prominent peaks: Schrock, Steinerberg, and Kreuzberg. The ascent to the Teufelsloch (Devil's Hole) is definitely worth it! The route offers an impressive variety of landscapes: rugged rocky paths, densely overgrown forest passages, and almost steppe-like juniper groves. There was surprisingly little activity along the way – wonderfully quiet. Only Steinerberg was there a lot of activity. In Altenahr – as always – construction and repair work is underway. The Ahr Valley is undergoing change, but that's precisely what makes it so valuable and exciting.
One of the most strenuous tours I've done in the Ahr Valley, but also a really beautiful tour despite the tough climbs, and with a delicious break right in the middle 🍷🍽...in beautiful weather☀️☀️☀️. Brilliant!
A great tour in perfect hiking weather with challenging ascents and descents. We were looking forward to a small snack at the Steinerberghaus, but they only had crumble cake. Apple crumble with shandy was okay.
Today's Mother's Day tour, Hornberg, Steinerberg (cake super tasty and fluffy), Schrock, Teufelsloch. Last year I was at Krausberg, today something more challenging😅💪. Good thing that 3/4 of the route was in the forest, even though I was there at 8 a.m., it was nice and warm today🙋🏼♀️.
A beautiful, varied hike, especially recommended in summer temperatures. A stop at the Steinerberghütte is worthwhile.
From Kreuzberg over the Steinerberg-Alm (refreshments with delicious cake) via the Schrock viewpoint to Teufelsley. Afterwards, back to Kreuzberg via beautiful paths and small detours. Engelsley and Teufelsloch next time:)
