Cycling

On this bike tour, you'll follow in the footsteps of the first settlers on the German-Dutch border. Starting in the beautiful old town of Meppen, you'll follow the Ems River and its oxbows into the Esterfelder Forest. You'll cycle along the water between enormous trees before continuing through an open cultural landscape. After Schöninghsdorf, you'll cross over to our neighbors: south of Zwartemeer, you'll enter the Dutch Bargerveen nature reserve. You'll be on a paved bike path and let your gaze wander over the unique natural surroundings.

In the Bargerveen sheepfold (Schaapskooi), you can refuel for the rest of your journey before returning to Germany. Next on the itinerary is the Fullen Forest – it's worth stopping for a short walk along the two-kilometer-long Fullener Moorweg adventure trail. On your return trip to Meppen, we recommend stopping at the Rühle farm garden.

Bargerveen Nature Reserve

Highlight • Natural Monument

After the peat bog was extracted in the 1960s, the Dutch Forestry Commission began the renaturation of what is now the Bargerveen nature reserve. Today, due to its exceptional diversity of flora and fauna, it enjoys special protection as a European bird sanctuary and an important wetland. You can explore the area on approximately 30 kilometers of hiking trails, enjoy panoramic views of the bog from the observation hill and tower, or experience the unique landscape on guided tours and accessible rides on the Veenland Express train.

Fullener Forest Experience

Highlight • Forest

In Fullener Wald you will find 20 native and non-native tree species on 285 hectares. The trees were sown and planted on degraded and plowed land between 1980 and 1995. From the forest of Fullen you can see how the moor turns into a forest. Important information about the habitat can be found on the trails Fullener Waldweg and Fullener Moorweg.

Rühle Village Farm Garden

Highlight • Structure

The cottage garden is located by the church in Rühle - you can't miss it. It's one of the best rest areas I've seen on my Ems bike tour. The local history association has created a cottage garden there, which you can also visit. In addition, a shelter and rest hut was built, where there is an e-bike charging point for three bikes. Opposite on the farm you can get milk, coffee, cold drinks and snacks from the vending machine for little money. Hats off to Rühle!

Ostrołęka Bridge

Highlight • Bridge

The pedestrian and cycle bridge, built in 2018, was given the name “Ostrołęka” on 13 September 2019 to mark the 25th anniversary of the town twinning.
