Hiking

On the Münsterberg tour in Breisach am Rhein, you'll experience exciting city history and impressive viewpoints. The route starts at the market square and leads you through the historic heart of the city. With comfortable paths and short climbs, you'll be perfectly connected, whether you arrive by bus or train.

On your way, the Gutgesellentor (Gutgesellentor) awaits you, the imposing entrance to the ascent of the Münsterberg, a testament to the city's medieval history and today home to the Breisach Carnival Guild. You'll gaze upon the historic Münsterberg of Vieux-Brisach, which served as a settlement for the Celts, Romans, and Hohenstaufens. The Romanesque-Gothic St. Stephen's Cathedral stands here as a landmark high above the Rhine. As an intermediate destination, you'll discover the Tulla Tower, a silent witness to the city's former center of power, halfway along the route.

The paths are mostly paved, pleasant to walk on, and lead you along side streets and footpaths through the picturesque old town. This place is ideal for a short excursion with a wealth of history. At the end, you'll return to the market square with its cafés and small shops, where you can enjoy a cozy snack at the end of the day.

Old Town of Breisach am Rhein

Highlight • Historical Site

The hill on which Breisach is situated—the Münsterberg—was located in the Rhine until Johann Gottfried Tulla's correction of the Rhine during floods. In ancient times, it was the seat of a Celtic prince. Later, the Romans built a fortress here, and the Hohenstaufen dynasty founded Breisach in its present form in 1158.

St. Stephen's Cathedral, Breisach

Highlight • Religious Site

In addition to the city's landmark, St. Stephansmünster with its famous art treasures, these are the wheel fountain in the middle of the upper town, the still existing old city gates, the magnificent baroque Rhine Gate, today the Museum of City History, at the Schwanenweiher, the medieval Kapftor at the end of the Goldengasse, the Hagenbach tower on Münsterbergstrasse, the copper gate at the square of the same name, and St. Joseph's Church with the former Schwedenturm in the lower town. The "Blue House", the former Jewish community center, on Rheintorstrasse (formerly Judengasse), as a small museum and meeting and event space, preserves the memory of the former Jewish community.

In the districts, the respective, partially a history of churches dating back to the Romanesque. In Grezhausen, next to the St. Bernard chapel, the baroque pigeon tower of the Günterstal monastery is worth seeing. Even a castle awaits visitors to Breisach. In the district of Oberrimsingen, the castle of the former local lords, the barons von Falkenstein, has been preserved, which today houses a well-known cabaret.

In Breisach and its districts, around 100 trilingual (German, French, English) panels designed by the city archive provide information about historic buildings and squares. Let yourself be taken along on a tour of the eventful history of our city.

Tulla Tower

Highlight • Monument

The Tulla Tower stands on the site of Breisach's old secular power center. It has been somewhat built into the festival grounds. Unfortunately, this doesn't give it the attention it deserves. All that remains of the former castle, which was later converted into a palace, is the plateau and the moat.
