Gsponer Höhenweg (High trail)

A hike on the Gspon High Trail is like a daydream in the mountains: You wander through sparse forests, cross alpine meadows, and constantly have the mighty peaks of the Mischabel range in view. As you hike along the slopes of the Weissmies Group above the Saas Valley, the sun accompanies you every step of the way. The tour is technically somewhat challenging, but manageable with surefootedness and a bit of fitness.

The hike begins in Gspon, a small mountain village high above the Vispertal. You can easily reach it by cable car from Stalden. The trail leads you south across wide meadows. Nowhere else in the Alps does the tree line reach as high as here. Soon you enter a sparse forest. At the small chapel of Finilu, the landscape opens up again, and you reach the Upper Black Forest and later the Siwibodu plateau with expansive views of the mountains.

The trail continues to the Hoferälpji, a rustic alpine pasture where cows graze in the summer and fresh milk is made into cheese. The trail now becomes more rugged. It leads you below the Jegihorn, over narrow paths and scree fields to the Hannig lookout point, which offers a fantastic view of the Saas Valley.

You'll soon reach Kreuzboden with its small lake and beautiful sun terrace. Here you can take a leisurely break or return to Saas-Grund by cable car.
