Hiking

Along the educational trail, you can learn a great deal about the Rochlitz Porphyry World Heritage stone at 15 stations. In addition to insights into the quarries and the lives of the stonemasons, the history of the Rochlitzer Berg and its porphyry tuff is also explored. In addition to a panoramic view of the surrounding area from the Friedrich August Tower, you'll also find various vantage points overlooking the Gleisberg quarry, which has been dug deep into the mountain. Only here does the extent of the mining within this National Geosite become tangible.

The nearby geoportal "Porphyrhaus Rochlitzer Berg" invites you to learn more about the Porphyrland Geopark as well as the geology and industrial history of the Rochlitzer Berg. In addition to serving as an extracurricular learning center, lectures, workshops, and creative activities are held here.

You can also look forward to the new audio journey through time, "Porphyry Educational Trail To Go." This will convey knowledge about the unique Rochlitz porphyry tuff in a contemporary and entertaining way. Using a QR code on your smartphone, you can activate short audio stories in which characters from the past and the imagination recount their experiences on the mountain. People such as Professor Clemens Pfau and the ornithologist Rudolf Zimmermann, as well as a witch, a stonemason's apprentice, a stonemason's wife, and, last but not least, the mascot Porpheus, have their say. They tell fascinating stories about the bright red Natural World Heritage stone and its history. Further information can be found at: www.rochlitzer-geschichtsverein.de/t0-lehrpfaduebersicht. We hope you enjoy exploring!

Haberkornscher Bruch

Highlight • Natural Monument

The Haberkornscher Bruch is an old quarry on the Rochlitzer Berg. Rochlitz porphyry, also known as “Saxon marble,” was mined here. The red stone is part of the natural stone world heritage.

Hermitage on Rochlitz Hill

Highlight • Historical Site

The hermitage on the Rochlitzer Berg was built in 1817 by Christian Gottlob Seidel, a quarry owner. Two rocks were connected by a wall, creating a small, chapel-like building. In the Romantic period, this place attracted many hikers and still serves as an idyllic rest stop today.

Königshöhe Monument

Highlight • Monument

Königshöhe is a small hill climb that's part of the Porphyry Leerpfad trail. Trees are relatively tall, and unfortunately, the view isn't very good.

A climbing castle on Rochlitzer Berg invites you to play. You will be greeted by the forest spirit Waldemar and his sister Wally. The forest playground is surrounded by trees and, with swings, slides and a climbing frame, is perfect for lots of romping. The older ones among you can make themselves comfortable on the seats in the shade.

The track quarry bears witness to the hard work in the quarry. But it also gives a glimpse of the unmistakable color of the Rochlitz porphyry, which is still quarried a short distance away.

Gleisbergbruch Viewpoint

Highlight • Viewpoint

The Gleisberg quarry was one of the most important quarries on the Rochlitzer Berg and was used to extract porphyry tuff until 1960. The red-yellow rock, formerly known as "red Rochlitz sandstone", was mainly used as a building material. Today, the former quarry is a popular tourist destination that attracts visitors with hiking trails and geological features. From here you have a fantastic view of the geotope.

Very nice observation tower with a good view. Gastronomy directly at the tower. Very cheap entry (€1.00).

Today's hike started at the parking lot on Rochlitz Mountain. The route led along the Porphyry Trail to the Friedrich August Tower, which was erected around 1860 to commemorate the anniversary of the death of Elector Friedrich August II (1854). The Porphyry Nature Trail forms an oval around the porphyry spoil heap. There are beautiful views towards the Ore Mountains.
