July 30, 2023, Kalorienweg Hersbruck

Today we went to Hersbruck on the calorie path to burn calories. An approx. 7 km long circular route from the old town of Hersbruck via the Michelsberg. The calories burned up to that point are shown on a sign at 8 stations. How I find a funny idea. However, I didn't find three of the eight signs 🫣🤷‍♂️. If you want, you can refill the burned calories in one of the numerous beer gardens..😀🍻🌮🌭🍔 Nice little round for in between

If I eat everything that is written on the signs🫣 I have to do the round twice. There were many rustic trees at the height in the area of the quarry. The path is very well signposted, I only somehow missed the first two signs.

This year’s first holiday tour in the Nürnberger Land! It is a mixture of a stroll through the city of Hersbruck with its beautiful old town and a mountain hike. The start is at the large Plärrer car park. The river Pegnitz flows right next to it, where "Art in the River" can currently be seen. Art installations by various artists can be seen in the water. Right next to the Pegnitz is the water gate, one of the landmarks of Hersbruck. In its current appearance, it dates from 1602. In front of it there is also the pavement toll house from 1690. This is where the pavement tariff for the use of the streets was levied - a kind of city toll. We continue through the old town to the Schloßbräuhaus, where brewing took place until 1765. The building then served as a salt storage facility until 1809. Opposite is the Hersbruck Castle. It forms the nucleus of the city. In the 10th century there was a castle here that guarded the crossing over the Pegnitz. The city developed in the shadow of the castle. Later the respective sovereigns and bailiffs sat here. The imperial city of Nuremberg, which had owned the Hersbrucker Land since 1504, had the castle demolished and instead built a simple castle in 1517, which was constantly expanded over the years. Here the nurse appointed by Nuremberg did his job. Today the castle is the seat of the local court. The town church of Hersbruck can be found not far from the castle. A church was built here soon after the castle was built in the 10th century. The oldest parts of the current building date from the 14th century. The diagonally opposite parish hall, built in the brutalist style of the second half of the 20th century, forms a striking architectural contrast. Along the Pegnitz it goes to the lower and upper market, between which the Hersbruck town hall stands. Its beginnings go back to the 14th century. It burned down in 1945 and was rebuilt in 1952. The Nuremberg Gate, built in 1444, is around the corner. From here it goes north up to the Michelsberg. From the restaurant there you have a beautiful view of the city. Then further east in the direction of Steinberg. Here you will find the quarry house, in Franconian "Stabruchhäusla", from which you have a beautiful view of Happurg and the Houbirg. The reservoir can also be seen in the distance. The way up, however, was not without it, with a 16% incline in places and damp terrain. The varied descent goes over beautiful forest paths and stairs, sometimes accompanied by small streams and rivulets. When you arrive in the valley, you pass the Fackelmann-Therme, the indoor and outdoor pools. Along the way you pass a memorial to the Hersbruck concentration camp branch of the Nazis, which was located on this area. The forced laborers had to assemble aircraft engines in the nearby tunnel in the Houbirg. The victims of the Nazi era are also commemorated in the nearby rose garden, through which one comes on the tour. From the rose garden it goes back over the Pegnitz back to the Plärrer.

On the last km we changed a bit and left the 8 because we preferred to walk through the meadows to the car than through the city.

If you follow the advice given on the information boards, you can be sure that you end the tour with an excess of calories, despite the steep incline. In times of self-optimization, the path is a beautiful relic that reminds us of the past with a wink. The path leads around the romantic Hersbruck and offers many different characteristics: through parks and meadows, along the river, into the forest, even a small section on one degree. The distant views of Nuremberg and the quarry pond and the Happburg reservoir are also beautiful; to do this, you have to make a little detour to the quarry house.

The deviations from the path at the end of the loop can be skipped 🤣... I was hoping to find salamanders by the stream. Unfortunately, it was too dry. Free parking is available at the Plärrer in Hersbruck.

No.7 from Pavel's book. We have moved the starting point behind the Christmas market. Overall an interesting round with Teufelsgraben, quarry and Michelsberg. The level crossing and the path in the park were closed and had to be bypassed. Finally, the city center of Hersbruck with mulled wine. Great sunny weather in powder snow.

We walked the calorie path as far as possible, but we got in the middle of it. The starting point would actually have been in Großviehbergstraße. A great round with great views of Hersbruck and Nuremberg.
