Hiking

The Miroslavec Trail is one of Medvednica’s oldest, at almost 150 years old. Named after Miroslavec Kulmer, who was the president of the Croatian Mountaineering Society in the early 1900s, the route is dotted with information panels that reveal fascinating insights into the mountain’s geology. It makes for a very pleasant walk, particularly during the warmer months, and is suitable for the whole family.

To reach the start, hop on the 102 bus for five stops from the Mihaljevac tram stop, alighting at the roundabout by the Šestine church. You’ll share the route with motorised traffic for a little while, so take care. The Šestinski Lagvić restaurant offers the opportunity for a bite to eat before you leave the road.

You’ll ascend a set of stairs that climb the steep, rocky terrain of Mačkova Pećina (Cat’s Cave). Don’t expect to see either a cat or a cave here: pećina was historically a word used to describe rocky exposed terrain, while the cat in the name refers to the fact wild cats once inhabited the region.

There are several pretty crossings of the Kraljevec stream before the trail ends at the Kraljičin Zdenac (Queen’s Well) picnic site, named after the Black Queen – thought to be Barbara Celjska, the second wife of King Sigismund of Luxembourg. From here, it’s not too far to the Lugareva Kuća (Forester’s House) for a drink or a bite to eat.

Miroslavec Mountain Shelter

Highlight • Mountain Hut

The Miroslavec mountain shelter is located at the very entrance to Medvednica on hiking trail 13, or the Miroslavec Educational Trail. It is passed when heading towards Kraljičin zdenac and Medvedgrad. Nearby (a little lower towards the town) are the famous catering facility "Lagvić", the house "Himper" and the chapel of St. Rok.

Path to Kraljicin Zdenac

Highlight • Trail

The hiking trail to Kraljičin zdenc number 13 (the so-called Miroslavec Educational Trail) leads from Šestine (more precisely from the Potočani road) and is probably one of the most visited trails on Medvednica.

The trail was built at the end of the 19th century by Count Miroslav Kulmer for walks by his wife Elvira.

Queen’s Well (Kraljičin zdenac)

Highlight • Natural Monument

The Queen's Well is actually a powerful drinking water spring from King's Creek and is named after the legendary "Black Queen" (presumably Barbara Celjska, the second wife of King Sigismund of Luxembourg).

The spring and its surroundings were maintained in the 19th century, while Count Kulmer built a small artificial lake or fish farm with a lugarnica before World War II.
