Hiking

Svartsö is one of the larger islands in Stockholm’s Central Archipelago, making this section longer than many. Even so, it’s an easy and rewarding hike, mostly along scenic gravel roads through open landscapes, peaceful forests, and alongside beautiful lakes and bays.

Walk the trail in an counterclockwise direction, following SAT markings along most of the route. On the western side, the path is marked with sunflower symbols, while on the eastern side, it follows bluebell waymarks.

Facilities on Svartsö are excellent, including two popular restaurants, a café, and a grocery store where you can also rent bikes — ideal if you want to explore more of the island at your own pace. If you have time to stay, Svartsö Skärgårdshotell at Norra Svartsö offers a beautiful sauna with sunset views over the bay, perfect for unwinding after a day on the trail.

Additional options include a hostel, waterside boathouses, and glamping tents with lake views. Wild camping is permitted for one or two nights, but please be respectful of locals and remember to leave no trace.

Svartsö is accessible year-round from Stockholm City via Vaxholm, Åsättra Brygga, or Boda. In summer, the North/South ferry line connects Svartsö with Ingmarsö and Brottö to the north and Möja to the south. These islands form a natural cluster and are easily linked together to create a fantastic week-long island-hopping adventure packed with memorable hikes, local food, and coastal charm.

The Stockholm Archipelago Trail (SAT) is a waymarked hiking trail that connects over 20 islands, accessible by a public ferry network. You can choose to spend a day at a time on the trail, connect nearby islands in conveniently grouped sections, or hike the SAT as a thru-hike for the full experience. Storträsket Lake

Highlight • Lake

Storträsket is the largest freshwater lake on the island of Svartsö. It is nestled in a beautiful location surrounded by forest and low hills with some wetland edges. The area feels quiet and secluded, making a nice contrast to the busier coastal areas. Some of the shoreline is quite soft, or covered in reed beds, so it's less often used for swimming. It is a great place to stop and relax.

A lovely little swimming spot by the lake, also ideal for camping. Please note that the lake provides drinking water for the surrounding houses; do not bring sunscreen, dish soap, shampoo, etc. into the water.

Bistro Sågen

Highlight • Restaurant

Bistro Sågen is set in a converted old sawmill near Skälvik on Svartsö. It has a rustic, classically archipelago vibe. You can book in advance - that might be a good call in the main summer season.
