On this tour, you'll immerse yourself in the lush nature of the Old Rhine, with its floodplains and islands. Two ferry rides across the state borders provide new perspectives. Starting in Oppenheim, with its beautiful market square at St. Catherine's Church, you'll board the first ferry: crossing the Rhine into Hesse.

You'll follow a wonderful dam-shaped cycle path along the reed meadows to the Kühkopf-Knoblochsaue nature reserve. There, you'll cycle through the magnificent landscape of the Old Rhine. At the Hofgut Guntershausen information center, you can learn interesting facts about the reserve.

The tour takes you through wide fields back to the Rhine, where you'll cross the Rhine by ferry near Gernsheim. The Eicher See recreation area invites you to take a break, and then you'll cycle directly along the river back to the historic wine-growing town of Oppenheim.

Rhine Ferry Helene (Gernsheim–Eich)

Highlight (Segment) • Structure

The Gernsheim Rhine ferry is the only way to get between the two Rhineland-Palatinate cities of Mainz (Weisenauer Brücke) and Worms (Nibelungenbrücke Worms) by car across the Rhine, along with the Landskrone Rhine ferry in Nierstein. The Rhine ferry connects the city of Gernsheim on the Hessian right bank of the Rhine with the Rheinhessen municipalities of Eich and Hamm on the left bank of the Rhine.

Lake Eicher is connected to the Rhine, so the lake is surrounded by a holiday resort with weekend homes, many of which have their own private jetty. Several spots offer excellent views of the lake. The terrace of the Kleine Kneipe (small pub) is located directly on the shore and offers cyclists and hikers a great place to take a break. Lake Eicher is not really a swimming spot, however.

A particularly beautiful route along the Rhine through the beautiful Rhine meadows along the dam. Good paths! Check the travel times!

Beautiful bike ride along the Rhine with many great places for a picnic - please take the garbage back with you. Not suitable for racing bikes and good physical condition required as many paths are not asphalted or concreted.

From Nierstein, we took the ferry across the Rhine. A magnificent, huge nature reserve, reed meadows, Kühkopf Knoblochsaue, the Old Rhine, numerous ponds, storks in the meadows and roofs, lots of butterflies 🦋 swans🦢🦢🦢, flowers on the dike slopes, ships, the Rhine, Eicher Lake, boat harbors 🛥🚤, a view of the Odenwald..... In Gernsheim, we crossed the Rhine again with the Helene ferry and returned along the Rhine Cycle Path. We even got a 🍨 at the end. The elevation gain is definitely not accurate; it's all nice and flat.

Wonderful day around the Rhine, until the rain fell heavily at the 31st km. Then the wind appeared. Fortunately, after a good ten km. the sun was back with a nice headwind. A beautiful day with a good variety of atmospheric conditions. in short, a beautiful day of discovery by bike in this magnificent country.

Beautiful, flat bike tour from Gernsheim by ferry ⛴ to Eich and from there to Nierstein along the Rhine. After a short rest, crossed over again at Nierstein and drove back over the Knoblochsaue to Gernsheim
