Hiking
The Floodplain Hiking Trail leads you through the colorful alleys of Schleswig-Holstein's oldest town, across wild meadows, and along the gently flowing Elbe River. On this easy circular hike, you'll explore the vibrant landscape surrounding the medieval town.
It starts at Schüsselteich lake in the heart of Lauenburg. Between half-timbered houses and brick facades, you'll first wander through the town's alleys. Perhaps you'll hear the clattering of storks building their nests on the town's rooftops.
You'll hike through the outskirts of the town to the Elbe-Lübeck Canal, whose history dates back to the Middle Ages. After crossing the waterway, you'll soon find yourself amidst wide floodplains and tall meadows. The trail takes you leisurely through the Stecknitz-Delvenau lowlands to the wide banks of the Elbe.
It's worth keeping your eyes peeled in the Lauenburg Elbe Foreland Nature Reserve: With luck, you might spot a beaver, see a kingfisher fly lightning-fast over the water, or watch an otter swim. The walk gradually returns to Lauenburg along the river. In the old town, you can round off your hike in one of the numerous cafés.

Sunshine 🌞 and hiking weather. Today we're off to a quick city tour and then off into nature. Thanks to the original explorer and creator of the tour, who inspired us. However, we have to admit that the tour mostly follows paved paths, which is a matter of taste. We prefer the smaller trails on sandy or forest paths.
Today we have made the Auenwanderweg around and in Lauenburg. Well signposted, we follow the path along the Elbe dike. Unfortunately, the official route runs on a tarred farm track. You can avoid it by walking on top of the dyke and enjoying the wide view of the Elbe and the Aue from there. The vastness of the landscape is calming. A Milan is circling above. The path swings north, away from the Elbe, past meadows with little Easter lambs. A short stretch along the B5 and then past the Palmschleuse in the direction of Lauenburg. We turn off the main road to the upper town. A resident speaks to me and asks if we have seen the white-tailed eagle, which is said to be seen here often. In the upper town, some houses look abandoned, some definitely are. It's hard to understand, because the view from up here is magnificent and definitely comparable to Blankenese. Since the time is already a bit advanced, we shorten the Auenwanderweg a little and descend past the castle tower into the beautiful old town of Lauenburg. It is simply beautiful and there are many details to discover on the historic facades. It is currently high water and so access to the small path on the banks of the Elbe is blocked. We stroll through the old town in the direction of the Elbbrücke, from where we enjoy the view of the Elbe and Kaiser Wilhelm, a historic paddle steamer, one last time for today. It was a nice Good Friday and the cameras of @Wanderuli 🥾🎒⛺🚲 and I can now rest.
Too much city and too little countryside on the route.
- Another tribute to old times - Some old town, some Elbe, some Auenwanderweg and my first ice cream this year. ☀️⛅️ 22-24°C Central bus station - historic old town - castle tower - Fürstengarten - Askanierstufen - Auwiese between the Elbe and Elbe-Lübeck Canal - Lauenburg Elbe foreland - pleasantly windy on the Elbe beach and on the dyke - border to MV - Palmschleuse - Elbe-Lübeck Canal - and old town again

So: Lauenburg is many things, but certainly not the oldest town in Schleswig-Holstein. It's not even the oldest town in the Duchy of Lauenburg.
The starting point at Schüsselteich seems a bit arbitrary to me: could I suggest either the central bus station on Askanierring or the train station? Both are
