Boniface is considered the "Apostle of the Germans" and significantly influenced missionary work in the Frankish Empire. The founding of the monastery on the Frauenberg in Fulda is attributed to him, and his grave is located in St. Salvator's Cathedral. On this circular hike, you'll follow in the footsteps of a key figure in German Christian history.
A suitable parking area is located near Marienstraße below the Frauenberg. Wide, cobbled steps lead you up to the Franciscan monastery with its magnificent garden and monastery church. Passing through the cemetery and a wooded park, you reach the so-called Rondell (Roundabout) with a view of the Horas district, which you then cross. The Boniface Church and the Boniface Fountain vividly illustrate the work of their namesake.
Now you stroll across the green meadows along the Fulda River. Imagine Boniface's student Sturmius looking over the Waides stream here and choosing the Frauenberg as the site for the future monastery.
Passing the watering hole and the carnival fountain, you reach the city center. In front of the imposing city palace, Boniface's gaze rests upon you – a monumental statue stands in his honor. Finally, you visit Fulda's landmark, the Baroque cathedral. The monastery church, the largest church building north of the Alps, once stood on this site. Inside, you will find Boniface's tomb near the crucifix altar.
You return to the parking lot through the Paulustor and along Hundshagen Park.
