Experience the charm of North Brabant by bike! This route around the historic fortified town of Megen takes you through a peaceful, green area full of culture and nature. Megen itself surprises with medieval charm, such as the old Prison Tower, complete with a unique detail: a stork's nest on the roof.

You'll cycle along country roads along the Meuse River, enjoying views of the water along the way. In Ravenstein, you can stop at the charming Café Brass aan de Maas, a popular spot for a drink with a panoramic view.

After visiting the impressively situated town of Grave on the Meuse River, you'll leave the river and cycle through the Brabant hinterland. Via Reek and Schaijk, the route takes you through the Herperduin nature reserve, where tranquility and greenery prevail.

Just before the end, you'll pass the former Bethlehem Monastery in Haren, now an event venue with a beautiful monastery garden. The perfect spot for a final moment of peace.

Back in Megen, you can relax on a terrace or begin your return journey. Traveling by public transport? Oss station is only a 25-minute bike ride away.

Fortified town Megen

Highlight • Historical Site

Whose was it, Megen? Sovereignty has been debated for a long time. For centuries, the fortified town of Megen was an independent county of its own, which was also not part of the Republic of the Seven United Netherlands. It was not until 1800 that Megen really became part of Brabant again, and later, in 1814, also of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The Prison Tower, together with another tower, formed the Prison Gate in Megen. This was a gateway, but also a prison. Nothing remains of the second tower, but the Gevangentoren in Megen survived all wars. You had better not come here. Inhabitants of Megen guarded the prisoners who were 'op den Poort', as it was popularly known. They also made sure that the prisoners did not starve – all for a fee, of course. Megen is also part of the Zuiderwaterlinie.
