Hiking

The Essing Jura Adventure Trail takes you out of the small, idyllic town past the historic Bruckturm with the bridge over the Altmühl oxbow, the Essinger Blautopf and the curved Tatzlwurm wooden bridge.

We continue to the Klausenhöhlen and back to Essing along the natural bank of the canal. It's worth the detour to the Schellnecker Bridge, from here you have a wonderful view of the historic Ludwig-Donau-Main Canal.

Essing Wooden Bridge and Bridge Tower

Highlight • Bridge

A very photogenic place with an idyllic setting of a wooden bridge, the Altmühl and Essing rivers, with its houses built directly against the Jura rock face.

View of the Blautopf spring (Essing)

Highlight • Natural Monument

A little hard to find because not so big. Located behind the restaurant. Access possible. Also seen from the trail from the top through the trees.

Tatzlwurm Bridge, Essing

Highlight • Bridge

The popularly called "Tatzelwurm" bridge over the Main-Danube Canal at Essing was until 2006 the longest wooden bridge in Europe with a length of 190 meters.
The striking architecture is worth seeing and the crossing by bike is in a good mood.

Klausen Caves

Highlight • Cave

It is a public cave in the Altmühl valley. The ca.330 meter long cave in the Jura limestone is between 25 and 55 meters above the valley floor. The cave consists of several rock niches lying close together at four different altitudes. As archaeological sites, they are divided (from bottom to top) into the Lower Klause, the Klausenniche as well as the Middle and Upper Klause.
