Sella traverse via Piz Boè

Hiking

A demanding high-alpine traverse across the Sella massif, including the summit of Piz Boè (3,152 m).

Starting at Passo Pordoi, the path climbs steeply on foot to Forcella Pordoi and continues across the rocky plateau to Piz Boè. From the summit and the Capanna Piz Fassa hut, the route heads north toward Rifugio Boè and on to Rifugio Pisciadù, before the long descent through the exposed Val Setus to Passo Gardena.

This is a serious mountain hike with long climbs, high-altitude terrain, and hazardous via ferrata sections that require sure-footedness, a head for heights, and proper equipment. Best undertaken in stable summer conditions, with time planned for stops at the rifugi along the way.

Lots and lots of people. An easy 3000 weather in summer. Also suitable for children used to walking in the mountains. Exposed but never dangerous cable passage.

Piz Boè Summit

Highlight • Summit

A 3000 is always worth it. The Piz Boè, which is so prominently enthroned on the Sella massif, is of course a perfect panoramic mountain. The ascent from Rifugio Boè is partly secured with wire ropes, but can be done entirely without via ferrata equipment if you are sure-footed and have a head for heights. There is a hut to stop at at the top of the summit.

Forcella D'Antersass

High above the surrounding valleys, the path over the Forcella D'Antersass connects the Boéhütte with the Pisciadúhütte.

Franco Cavazza Hut at Pisciadù

Highlight • Mountain Hut

The mountain hut of the same name is located directly above Lake Pisciadù. The moon-like landscape in which the hut stands really seems to be out of this world. The surrounding walls rise up craggy and the soil with little vegetation is covered by huge boulders. Over 100 mountain hikers can spend the night in the hut. Via Ferrata al Pisciadù

Highlight • Climb

FERRATA = FERRATA KIT.
Stop saying it's "not necessary," but who says so?
I climbed the via ferrata on Sunday, August 31, 2025, and the rock was smooth and wet. I met terrified and unsure people who found themselves there, unsure of what to do because they'd been told a harness wouldn't be necessary, that it would be easy. You should ALWAYS carry the kit, and then decide at your own risk whether or not to use it. These statements are dangerous; they create traffic jams on via ferratas and put those who don't feel safe and those around them at risk.

Gardena Pass

Highlight • Mountain Pass

From the Gardena Pass, you have an unforgettable panoramic view of the surrounding peaks and mountain ranges of the Dolomites. To the south rises the Sella massif, to the north the Cir peaks tower steeply. To the west you can see the famous Sassolungo, and to the east the view extends to the peaks of the Val Badia. Besides numerous cable cars that ascend to the surrounding mountains, you will also find various accommodations at the Gardena Pass.

Trail Reviews

Stetig voran
August 12, 2024, Sella Überquerung mit Piz Boe

Absolute dream tour with ascent of the fairly easy Piz Boe (3152m). The tour had three challenges: 1. Finding a cheap parking space at the Gardena Pass (we didn't dare park wildly). 2. Descent to the Pordoi Pass was very unpleasant. 3. Bus ride back from the Pordoi Pass to the Gardena Pass (lines 471 and 473 - duration 1.5 hours). We started before 6 to have enough time and not to walk in the extreme heat. Duration with breaks: 8 hours

Another piece on the Dolomiten Höhenweg 🥰 The Sella crossing from south to north -> start at 6°C at the Sass de Pordoi mountain station, past the Rifugio Forcella Pordoi first to the Piz Boè, highest point at 3152m. Unfortunately, visibility wasn't that extensive due to clouds. Then descent to the reef. Boè, continue via L'Antersas, down to Pisciadù Lake and Pisciadù Refuge. Another small via ferrata went down into the Val Setus, down countless hairpin bends in the scree and then over grassy crests below the rock faces to the Gardena Pass. Conclusion: A great tour in an impressive landscape with some nice scrambling on the steel cable (easy via ferrata)😊 - a little more vision would have been nice today, but the clouds offered good sun protection🤷‍♀️ By the way, the (weather app) predicted rain started right on time for the return trip, the thunderstorm+heavy rain came 3 hours later and for the rest of the evening🙈
